Job Description

Position: ASL Instructor for International & Indigenous Languages Program (IILP)


The OttawaCarleton District School Board is seeking qualified ASL (American Sign Language) instructors to fill Continuing Education International & Indigenous Languages teaching and/or supply teaching position. Classes take place on Saturdays 1:003:30 pm) and during the week for the After School Program (Mondays & Tuesdays 4:005:15 pm). Classes on Saturday afternoon and during the After School Program are offered virtually throughout the year.


We are also looking for ASL instructors to teach during the summer program July 428 Monday to Friday either inperson (Summerside PS) or virtually.. The summer program is offered in the morning 9:3012:00 and in the afternoon 1:003:30.


The rate of pay for an IILP instructor is $29.26 4 vac pay per hour.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan coordinate and implement a program that is optimal for the ASL learning and that reflects current teaching practices in Ontario;

  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of students;

  • Familiarity with digital tools (e.g. Google Meet Google Classroom Google Site etc. to be able to teach virtually;

  • Incorporate equitable and inclusive learning practices;

  • Assess and evaluate students progress;

  • Communicate students progress to parents/guardians and students;

  • Supervision of students in any learning setting (physical or virtual);

  • Attend professional development learning opportunities.


Education experience and qualifications:

Applications will be considered on the basis of the following:

  • Fluency in ASL;

  • Teaching experience with preference to ASL teaching experience;

  • Related degree or diploma with preference to Ontario College of Teachers certification or equivalent.

Preference will be given to candidates who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Candidate selection will be based on the results of interview teaching experience qualifications and reference checks.

All offers of employment will be conditional upon the program running in the school year and during the summer program.


Instructors who are not currently OCDSB employees will be required to submit a valid Police Records Check for employment with the vulnerable sector acceptable to the OCDSB and less than 6 months old prior to their first day of work.
