JOB SUMMARY
Plan organize and coordinate garden and greenhouse activities. Supervise and instruct prisoner workers in
horticultural practices chemical use and other propagation techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Horticulture or other closely related field; OR an
equivalent combination of related education and experience in horticulture agriculture and/or landscape
design.
A pesticide applicator license and ServSafe certification must be obtained within three 3 months of hire date.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent(s) in this position
and are not allinclusive. The omission of specific duties and responsibilities will not preclude it from the position.
Applicants must be prepared to demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable
accommodation.
Supervises and instruct prisoner workers participating in the Horticulture Program.
Designs develops and administers the agriculture plans for the Jail Gardens.
Manages daytoday operational activities in the Jail Gardens.
Manages public produce sales and other related events
Tracks resource use and garden production information.
Generates statistical data and progress reports.
Works cooperatively with program stakeholders and participants.
Researches and develop educational opportunities for prisoner workers and the public.
Facilitates Jail Garden tours for stakeholders and the public.
Instructs Food Handlers Permit classes to prisoner workers.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)
Knowledge of:
Best horticulture practices and standards
Data collection and analysis
Basic computer programs (Microsoft Office)
Problem solving and decision making techniques
Safe food handling procedures
Ponds and habitat maintenance
Integrated pest management techniques
Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)

Skills and Abilities to:
Educate prisoners and the public on gardening practices
Manage and track the production and sale of produce
Inventory tools seeds produce and equipment
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Manage the operation of two heated greenhouses and produce gardens
Serve as a resource for landscape horticulture and pond projects
Work with a variety of stakeholders in various settings

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position works in the Salt Lake County Jail (which is a locked down facility) has direct contact with
prisoners and may be exposed to stress as a result of human behavior in a jail environment.
Time will be spent in office classroom garden and public settings. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION
This position is required to work with prisoners at both the Salt Lake County Metro and Oxbow Jails as well as
frequently attend the Downtown Farmers Market.
May be required to work nights and weekends as needed.
