Job Description
Job Summary: Under supervision of the Chief Preparator this position participates in all aspects of gallery renovation exhibition rotation artwork packaging and artwork transportation at the Gilcrease Museum. This position also works with the Exhibitions team to fabricate display cases object mounts crates and other exhibitionrelated fixtures. Preparator I is expected to be knowledgeable of best practices in the field of art handling with professional experience working at museums art galleries and/or cultural institutions. Essential Functions (Responsibilities): Works as a member of the Exhibitions team to install/deinstall collection objects and traveling exhibitions at the Gilcrease Museum. Performs and assists with gallery renovation between exhibitions. Typical tasks include moving and painting gallery walls installing casework and mounting A/V equipment. Performs daily inspection and maintenance of exhibition spaces to ensure the cleanliness presentation and safety of objects on display. Responsible for setting and maintaining lighting levels in exhibition spaces. Takes lead on art handling requests for various museum departments. Assists with the fabrication of casework crates mounts labels and fixtures. Assists in the preparation and packaging of museum collection objects for shipment. Loads/unloads shipments of cratedartwork(s) and transports works throughout the building. Transports artwork and collection objects between other institutions as needed. Assists Collections staff with maintenance and cleaning of fine art storage areas. Responsible for maintaining a clean and functional workspace. Communicates purchasing and staffing needs to Chief Preparator. Provides adequate lead time for requests involving vacation or leave time. Maintains professional communication with all department members museum staff and visitors. Performs other duties as requested. Required Qualifications: Knowledge/Skill/Ability Equivalent Education/Experience Working knowledge of current museum best practices in art handling shipping and installation. Ability to work independently and in team environments with a high attention to detail. Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to calculate measurements and interpret miscellaneous drawings and schematics. Proficient in using a variety of common woodworking tools. Trained in the operation of various material lifts such as forklifts scissor lifts and pallet jacks. Familiar with OSHA standards for jobsite safety. Must have a valid Class A drivers license. Equivalent Education/Experience Bachelors degree in art Design Museum Studies or related field preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience working in a museum. Experience leading teams of 2 or more people in a professional setting. Physical Demands
Working environment is primarily indoors and occasionally outdoors. Requires use of various hand tools and equipment. May be exposed to the following: hazardous materials flammable liquids excessive dust cutting/chipping/ grinding toxic fumes/vapors/odors and high noises. Work requires the handling of highly valuable and culturally sensitive works. This position occasionally requires lifting carrying pushing and pulling more than 50 pounds.
