Job Description

Flow Cytometry Lead


Leads act as a point person in the clinical laboratory to provide handson guidance and support. Much of the Lead role is participating in clinical rotations and performing clinical work. Leads are expected to role model and enforce a respectful and professional work environment within the laboratory; as well as implement and maintain quality standards and troubleshoot problems as they arise.


The Flow Cytometry Lead acts as the primary trainer of new employees for technical competency. Additionally Leads serve as a first point of contact for laboratory staff to discuss questions comments or concerns; with leads in turn bringing these items to the supervisor as applicable. Finally Leads implement policies and procedures as developed by the supervisor/technical director as well as providing feedback and assistance developing policies as directed by the supervisor/technical director. Essential qualities of Leads include knowing when and how to appropriately escalate concerns and how to effectively engage in troubleshooting.

Lead positions are in adjunct to the levels in the Career Development Pathways such as Level II Technician Lead. The Lead role does not replace the I II III Senior titles but is in addition to.


Responsibilities include and are not limited to:

  • Patient case work (technical)
    • Wet lab
  • Oversee the daily workflow of the laboratory (technical)
    • Keep supervisor and section technical director apprised of daily workload and any operational issues
    • Coordinate laboratory to aid in timely reporting of approved cases to client
    • Prioritize or triage cases daily
    • Provide resolution to technical and instrumentation issues according to policy and procedure
    • Monitoring of overall test performance (all systems)
    • Manage laboratory staffing/rotations on a daytoday basis within the context of the schedule (e.g. lunch rotations staff call outs adjusting to split shipment etc.
  • Section staffing (administrative)
    • Manage daily schedule creation and time off requests etc.
    • Carry out 6 month and annual reviews in coordination with supervisor
    • Assist in interview/hiring process in coordination with supervisor
  • Quality Management (technical/ administrative)
    • Implement QM protocol as advised by supervisor
    • Implement section specific QA/QC activities as advised by supervisor
      • Delegate performance of QA/QC activities among section staff
      • Ensure that they are completed and documented per policy
      • Pass along documentation to Supervisor
    • Carry out proficiency testing in consultation with Supervisor
    • Assist Supervisor with updating protocols as directed
    • Assist Supervisor in scheduling technical maintenance
    • Assist Supervisor in CAP compliance matters
  • Training (technical)
    • Implement departmental training plan assist with any future modifications with supervisor and section director oversight
    • Training of new staff members for technical competency
    • Facilitate sixmonth competency testing for new personnel and yearly proficiency for all personnel with the assistance from Supervisor as needed
  • Meetings (administrative)
    • Assist supervisor in leading weekly section operation meeting
    • Lead daily team checkins (huddles)
    • Monthly one on one meetings with staff

Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree required MT/MLS preferred
  • 3 years of flow specific laboratory experience preferred
  • Must meet Flow Technician II or Flow Technologist II qualifications
  • Proficient in instrument set up sorting and basic WinList operations
  • Demonstrates a strong grasp of the overall operations of the flow team and department operations
  • Consistently exemplifies the highest attention to detail and accuracy in technical work
  • Maintains a comprehensive understanding of hematological malignancies
  • Ability to manage and oversee a highvolume workflow
  • Possesses an understanding of disease states instrument knowledge sorting and panel selection
  • Indepth understanding of analytical processes including QC analysis accurate interpretation of reports and panel selection
  • Experienced in troubleshooting and providing constructive solutions to problems
  • Strong communication skills with all team members including the section supervisor and technical director
  • Implements and supports laboratory standards with all team members
  • Ability to encourage others to set a functional worklife balance and to model appropriate boundaries for others

Fulltime physical presence at our Seattle laboratory is an essential job function of this role.

Compensation & Benefits Package:

HematoLogics offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package which includes medical vision and dental insurance with 100 of monthly premiums paid by the company for employees and 50 of premiums paid for an employees spouse/partner/dependents.
