Job Description

Introduction

The department may fill positions at the Industrial MachineRepair Mechanic 1 2 or 3 level based upon candidate qualifications and thenature of the assignment.

The names of eligible candidates who successfully completethe selection process will be placed on the highestlevel eligible list forwhich they qualify.

These are the first three titles in the Industrial MachineRepairperson series. Incumbents may progress through levels 2 5 uponcompleting a probationary period at each level competency achievementrequired experience and job performance.

Purpose

Industrial Machine Repair Mechanics perform preventativemaintenance and repairs to Milwaukee Water Works (MWW) equipment andfacilities operate snow and ice control equipment and perform routine dutiesat outlying booster stations.

Essential Functions

Preventative Maintenance

  • Perform or assist with preventative maintenance on small engine equipment such as snow blowers lawnmowers chainsaws generators auxiliary lights air compressors and trimmers.
  • Set up and break down coagulation equipment and perform flushing of coagulators.
  • Perform cleaning of fountains and surrounding area.
  • Perform preventative greasing of equipment with proper grease type.
  • Obtain and process oil samples for pumps.

Facilities and Machine Repair

  • Perform or assist with complex repairs equipment installation and replacement and troubleshooting electrical HVAC and automation systems and equipment.
  • Repair minor sample lines near instrumentation points pipe up to 1 shelves brackets guards bushings and safety equipment.
  • Repair or replace ball valves and gate valves up to 3.
  • Perform Arc (Stick) welding to repair facilities and equipment.
  • Perform or assist with minor adjustment of gland packing.
  • Perform routine tasks at booster stations.
  • Industrial Machine Repair Mechanic 3: Use machine tools to fabricate and install shelves brackets guards bushings safety equipment and various parts.

Other Maintenance and Repair

  • Perform or assist with priming pumps and oil changes.
  • Perform or support preventative maintenance of centrifugal pumps fence operators and air compressors.
  • Perform or assist with the repair of chemical pumps threaded pipes and fittings building appurtenances storage facilities and various drive train equipment.
  • Perform or assist with set up and break down of fountains
  • Support crew leaders in gathering information about equipment condition trends.
  • Assist Steamfitters in the construction and repair of piping systems.
  • Assist Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) Steamfitters with cleaning of equipment and filter/belt changes.
  • Support Automation personnel and Municipal Service Electricians with troubleshooting of the control system.
  • Assist Plants Operations with the installation and removal of water gates.
  • Obtain or assist with obtaining vibration and runout readings on equipment.
  • Assist with the cleaning and repair of ozone contactors.
  • Perform Confined Space Attendant duties using multigas detection meters and radios
  • Industrial Machine Repair Mechanic 3: Perform inspection of confined space safety equipment.
  • Industrial Machine Repair Mechanic 3: Perform daily chemical testing at fountains and adjust dosing as needed.
  • Industrial Machine Repair Mechanic 3: Use the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and perform audits on equipment.

Conditions of Employment

Industrial Machine Repair Mechanics must be able to:

  • Perform duties related to custodial work and snow removal.
  • Climb ladders enter confined spaces and wear confined space safety equipment.
  • Lift and handle at least 50 pounds of equipment or material and more weight with assistance.
  • Work at heights up to 100 feet in confined spaces in close proximity to hazardous chemicals in all weather conditions and with high noise levels.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment including safety shoes glasses and hearing protection.
  • Work mandatory overtime and respond to emergency callouts when needed.
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Possess good manual dexterity.

Minimum Requirements

Industrial Machine Repair Mechanic 1:

  1. One year of experience performing industrial machine repair maintenance adjustment and installation duties closely related to the essential functions listed above. Also see All Positions below.

Industrial Machine Repair Mechanic 2:

  1. Three years of experience performing industrial machine repair maintenance adjustment and installation duties closely related to the essential functions listed above. Also see All Positions below.

Industrial Machine Repair Mechanic 3:

  1. Five years of experience performing industrial machine repair maintenance adjustment and installation duties closely related to the essential functions listed above. Also see All Positions below.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may beconsidered.

All Positions:

2. Valid drivers license at the time of appointment andthroughout employment.

3. Forklift and Skid Steer Loader Operator certification withinthe probationary period and throughout employment.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Journey level Machine Repairperson certification.
  • Pump repair experience 250 gpm or larger).

Knowledge Skills Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical

  • Ability to perform precision repairs on lightduty equipment.
  • High degree of mechanical aptitude and skill in machine repair.
  • Skill in using drill presses bench grinders and hand and power tools common to the trade.
  • Ability to understand water treatment plant chemical feed systems piping and appurtenances.
  • Ability to understand the preventative maintenance processes for industrial pumps.
  • Ability to use the correct methods to apply torque according to specifications.
  • Ability to operate a truck and 30 trailer to transport equipment and materials.
  • Ability to operate a forklift to move and store materials.
  • Ability to operate equipment and install/remove vehicle attachments for snow and ice control.
  • Ability to read diagnose and troubleshoot from service/technical manuals blueprints plans specifications and other workrelated documents.
  • Ability to utilize applicable computer hardware and software like the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) programs.

Communication and Interpersonal

  • Willingness and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with coworkers and citizens whose backgrounds may differ from ones own.

Current Salary

Industrial Machine Repair Mechanic 1:

The current salary range (PG 7BN) is $50123$62904annually and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukeeresidents is $51626$64791 annually. Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon levelof experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

Industrial Machine Repair Mechanic 2:

The current salary range (PG 7EN) is $60147$76467annually and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukeeresidents is $61952$78761 annually. Appointmentabove the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and otherqualifications and is subject to approval.

Industrial Machine Repair Mechanic 3:

The current salary range (PG 7HN) is $75184$92290annually and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukeeresidents is $77440$95058 annually. Appointmentabove the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and otherqualifications and is subject to approval.

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consistof one or more of the following: an evaluation of education experience and/orresponses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test astructured interview or other assessment methods. The Department of EmployeeRelations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates tostructured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews mayinclude written exercises. Selection process component weights will bedetermined by further analysis of the job.

THIS IS A CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT. Applications will beaccepted and interviews held during 2025 as often as required to meet the needsof the City.
