Overview
The inhospital paramedic will work assigned shifts in the Emergency Department. During this time the paramedic will be able to function up to their level of certification in the State of Iowa under the direction of Emergency Department Physicians and Registered Nurses following existing policies and procedures of the Emergency Department as approved by the Emergency Department Medical Director.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Management
- Assists in creating a positive work environment by mentoring of staff/students and working with team members to develop and facilitate initiatives to strive for positive outcomes in quality and care of patients.
- Complies with all policies and procedures and guides team members with compliance.
- Reliable attendance is an expectation of the team member role.
Safety and Quality
- Supports evidencebased clinical practice and questions the rationale and scientific basis for clinical practice and/or changes in practice.
- Complies with changes in clinical practice and standards.
- Participates in data collection when the opportunity is presented.
- Supports/participates in interpretation of clinical literature and uses to validate and/or change clinical practice.
Service
- Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills with patients families healthcare team members and other customers. Verbal communication is clear and precise. Written communication is legible if handwritten and done in a timely manner using approved abbreviations.
- Computer documentation is done in accordance with hospital and unit policies.
- Realtime documentation is utilized.
- Tools such as SBAR are consistently utilized to assure that critical information is clearly communicated shared and updated with each handoff. SBAR handoffs are utilized to communicate patient treatment and assessment information patient education needs goals of care and other quality care measures.
Financial
- Helps maintain the department in a fiscal sense when working with supplies.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Identify items that are minimally required to perform the essential functions of this position.
Preferred or Specialized
Not required to perform the essential functions of the position.
Education:
Current Paramedic Licensure in the State of Iowa.
Critical Care Paramedic
Experience:
Minimum of three years experience on a paramedic ground service or related experience.
Recent Critical Care Paramedic experience with air or ground EMS service Current
License(s)/Certification(s):
Current Paramedic license in the state of Iowa.
Must obtain NIHSS within 90 days of hire and maintain every two years thereafter.
Certification in BLS ACLS and PALS according to standards of the American Heart Association obtained withing 90 days of hire.
Completion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually.
Critical Care Paramedic
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
The paramedic must be able to function in collaboration with the Emergency Department nurse to provide the best medical attention to the patient.
Skilled in Arrhythmia interpretation
Other:
Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to develop/maintain
