Introduction:
The position is administered by the office of Vice Chancellor Student Affairs at Kapiolani Community College. The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (VCSA) is charged with administrative control for planning and administering all programs and services within the Student Affairs units. The specific functions of this organizational unit include outreach and admissions financial aid graduation and transcript evaluations credit and noncredit registration student engagement student counseling for specific and targeted populations student grievances and complaints and related learning support services. The role entails providing essential support to support Student Success at KapiolaniCommunity College within the Student Affairs units.


Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Foster selfawareness and personal growth through accessible and studentfocused counseling services.
  • Provide academic transfer career and life planning and personal/social issues and other student support services to improve student engagement learning development retention graduation and success.
  • Coordinate and provide counseling services in modes to best support student learning (including but not limited to individual and group sessions classroom presentations email phone web etc.; utilize technology to provide student support services.
  • Empower students to realize their potentials by facilitating transition and integration to college and bridging to future learning and life/career goals.
  • Strategically develop implement assess (through utilizing data and outcomesbased assessment methods) and improve interventions that support student learning development and success.
  • Facilitates the provision of a wide range of student development services and college persistence and retention initiatives such as firstyear experience activities financial aid and scholarship application new student orientation curriculum development and instruction student success workshops career counseling (assessment evaluation and exploration) satisfactory academic progress interventions referrals to onand offcampus resources exploring of career/employment/continued education opportunities and student success initiatives and services.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff from other units to create partnerships for seamless delivery of counseling activities and other support services for Kapiolani Community College students.
  • Participate in outreach orientation and registration activities. Evening weekend and outreach assignments may be part of the regular workload.
  • Perform related professional duties including:
    • Contribute to the growth and development of the counseling discipline and college through committee work and other collegerelated activities.
    • Engage in professional and public service related to ones professional status or expertise.
    • Engage in ongoing professional development activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Counseling and Guidance Counseling Psychology College Student Personnel Services Human Resources (to include both CTAHR and Personnel) Communications or related field*; OR
  • Bachelors degree in Counseling and Guidance Counseling Psychology College Student Personnel Services; Human Resources (to include both CTAHR and Personnel) Communications or related field*; AND3 years related work experience.
*Note: Related fields include: Education (to include all degrees in this field) Family Resources Human Development Psychology (to include all degree in this field) Public Health Rehabilitation Counseling Social Work Sociology and Student Services Personnel.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to build counseling relationships with students individually and collectively that will assist them in: a) developing selfawareness b) identifying issues that impact academic success and c) developing decisionmaking skills (set individual goals generate and evaluate alternatives and make informed decisions).
  • At least three years of professional experience in counseling/advising within a postsecondary institution with adults in community based programs/agencies (i.e. DVR social work workforce development etc. or with adults in private practice.
  • At least three years of professional experience in counseling (community) college students in the areas of academic transfer career and life planning and personal/social issues and other student support services.
  • Experience in the higher education environment academic advising and support services to veterans military and military affiliated students (active veterans national guard military reserves qualified military dependents).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from a wide array of backgrounds and life experiences at an opendoor institution (i.e. socioeconomic cultural levels of academic preparedness high school dual enrolled non traditional learners or returning adults career preparation/workforce transition care givers students with learning other disabilities).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with a wide range of counseling functions both independently and as a part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate implement assess and improve counseling strategies projects and activities to promote student learning retention success and graduation.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students faculty and staff and to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect and interpret data in designing assessing and improving student support strategies and activities.
  • Leadership managerial or coordination experience in a postsecondary setting.
  • At least three years of experience serving on a Behavioral Intervention Team or CARES Team in an institution of higher education.
  • Evidence of commitment to Kapiolani Community Colleges vision of positioning itself as a model indigenous serving institution whose graduates strengthen the social economic and sustainable advancement of Hawaii and the world.
