The Team
We are open to either Senior or Principal level for this position.
As a Senior or Principal Database Engineer on the Database Engineering team you will own the architecture tooling maintenance and performance optimizations of our production database systems built on Postgres technology. The Database Engineering team is responsible for all of the AWS RDS infrastructure which powers our loans. You will lead the way in developing tools and processes for software engineers to help them develop better data models to support our data quality initiatives. Youll have wide latitude in technology options to help us choose the right technology for our evolving data workflows.
What were looking for:
- Have 8 years of experience in a Senior Database Engineer/DBA role using Postgres preferably some of this is using AWS RDS
- Advanced knowledge of data modeling techniques for RDMS
- Strong experience in optimizing sql queries and techniques for improving data workflows
- Experience implementing data governance initiatives in the application layer (quality privacy retention etc)
- Have knowledge of Postgres extensions and performance optimization techniques.
- Are familiar with Postgres scalability solutions and can use this knowledge to guide design discussions
- Have knowledge of fundamental AWS building blocks (EC2 EBS S3 RDS IAM VPC)
- Are comfortable working in highsecurity / highcompliance environments such as finance or healthcare
- Have relevant technical skills (scripting SQL Unix command line tools)
- Have experience mentoring and collaborating with Software Engineers on Data Modeling best practices
- Level will depend on total experience
Position Location This role is available in the following locations: Remote San Mateo Columbus Austin
Time Zone Requirements This team operates across all U.S. time zones.
Travel Requirements This team has regular onsite collaboration sessions. These occur 3 days per quarter at an Upstart office. If you need to travel to make these meetups Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.

At Upstart your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic locationwith our digital first philosophy Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by jobrelated skills experience and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
