We are looking for people across all our rich diversity to help keep the City of Edmonton clean as a Waste Collection Operator.
The Waste Collection Operator position requires operation of a tandem front load bin truck and rear load collection vehicle (GVW up to 24000 kg) to collect waste and recycling from large bins/carts of varying sizes You will provide waste collection service to a variety of sites primarily for communal dwellings and City owned facilities.
What will you be doing
- Operate a full tandem front load bin truck expertly in all weather conditions including maneuvering through confined areas such as back lanes and congested parking lots
- Operate tandem Rear load collection vehicle for the purpose of cart collection
- Master the art of operating hydraulic controls to load efficiently Refuse material
- Perform and document pretrip and posttrip inspections follow regularly scheduled maintenance and report defects on collection vehicles
- Maintain daily truck sheets stating load weight time of collection and service locations
- Report bin defects service difficulties or bylaw infractions encountered to appropriate personnel
- Select the most efficient routes for travel to and from assigned work areas and disposal locations
- Respond to questions and/or complaints from the public concerning waste collection programs
- Maintain a positive customer service attitude and adhere to all work procedures including safety and environmental regulations and procedures
- Adhere to all policies and procedures during the collection process including safety and environmental regulations and procedures
- Maintain a clean and sanitary collection vehicle
- Perform other and related duties as required
Work Environment:
- Driving for extended periods in all weather conditions
- Assisting in maneuvering Bins/carts to collection vehicle in all weather conditions
- Cleaning collection vehicle daily cleaning of hopper location

- Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by truck driving experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience including 1 year of experience driving vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 24000 kilograms
Assets:
- Experience in the Waste Industry
- Experience operating tandem frontload and rearload collection vehicles
- Completion of a Defensive Driving Course
- Current Standard First Aid certification is an asset
Skills Required for Success:
- Good interpersonal skills in order to work well with other City employees like inspectors and other collectors as well as the public
- Knowledge of appropriate material handling practices to avoid skin and eye contamination cuts slipping and associated mishaps
- Ability to maneuver bin carthandling controls to minimize damage to bins/carts and avoid adjacent hazards at collection sites
- Physically capable of sustained heavy manual labour including loading recycling refuse containers and maneuvering bins/carts on site
- Physically capable of driving for prolonged periods (up to 8 hours per day) while working in adverse weather and road conditions

- Valid Alberta Class 3 drivers license with airbrake (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
- Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position there may be a cost associated with this requirement
- Pass a physical strength evaluation (Functional Ability Recruitment Evaluation test F.A.R.E. and a preemployment City medical examination is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmontons Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment including medical monitoring is a requirement for this position
