CBC NORTH is looking for an enterprising and collaborative reporter to work in our Whitehorse newsroom embedded with our current affairs unit.
Your role
As an exceptional journalist and a selfstarter you must be able to analyze a broad range of issues and thrive in the fastpaced highpressure world of storytelling within a multiplatform newsroom. You will have lots of ideas a fresh approach to telling stories and a keen desire to ensure our programming is timely relevant and reflects the news our audiences need to know right now. You are passionate about narrative storytelling can identify and execute compelling enterprising work and have an ability to reversion stories depending on platform and need.
You know how to gather write edit and package content for audio platforms and also digital and video. You thrive on the pressure of reporting on breaking news from the field and in finding original stories to help set the news agenda. You are passionate about championing stories and sources from the Yukons underrepresented communities and you know that every story needs to include a range of perspectives.
As someone with a deep working knowledge of the Yukon (or the ability to develop one quickly) you understand its political economic and cultural landscapes. Your work highlights how issues affect the daytoday lives of the people who live here. You have a desire to visit communities across the territory building relationships and understanding.
As a smaller market station you will have the opportunity to backfill in other positions in the newsroom to expand your training and experience.
In this role you will ensure that your work meets all CBC journalistic standards and that our stories are fair balanced accurate thoughtful immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.
Your responsibilities:
Pitch daily source research factcheck and present short and longform enterprise stories that will engage the audience deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices on all our platforms.
Live up to the CBCs Journalistic Standards and practices.
Appear regularly on Yukons three radio programs doing live hits instudio debriefs other audio treatments
Collaborate and regularly contribute to radio news and digital visual and social platforms to ensure our coverage is vibrant relevant responsive and serves the widest possible audience.
As required youll edit material created by others and perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the shows and the newsroom.
Respond quickly to report on breaking news events as they unfold go live when the story demands it
Share responsibility for radio programming can identify gaps and pitch in to help
Your profile:
A commitment to accuracy fairness and balance in storytelling.
Demonstrated understanding of the Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Knowledge of Yukon First Nations.
Experience reporting in Indigenous and rural communities a major asset.
Strong organizational skills; ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and efficiently and to juggle multiple story chases.
Demonstrated experience working in the pressure of a news and breaking news environment.
Strong understanding of audio storytelling online news and reporting for video platforms.
Ability to generate pitch and pursue story ideas across multiple platforms.
Ability to travel within the territory on assignment.
Ability to work flexible hours and overtime.
Ability to forge positive team relationships and keen to work on a team that values collaboration and transparency.
A strong desire to live and promote the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.
Attention to detail and strong time management skills.
Sound news judgment and ability to work effectively under newsroom deadline pressure.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; a standout colleague.
A passion for learning new tools and journalism forms and an interest in shaping them for the future.
Must possess a valid drivers licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/RadioCanadas insurance company other classes considered an asset.
University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent related experience.
Ability and willingness to work a variety of shifts including early starts late finishes and weekends.
