Job Description

Work Location: Various Locations Plant Department

Age: 16 years of age or older and registered to return to secondary or postsecondary studies in September 2025.

Salary Rate:

  • $16.20/hour plus 4 vacation pay (students under 18 years and have not completed the Secondary School Graduation Diploma)

  • $17.20/hour plus 4 vacation pay (students 18 years and over or students who have completed the Secondary School Graduation Diploma)

We are now accepting applications for the 2025 Summer Student Caretaker positions. College/University students could start as early as May 2025 and High School students could start as early as July 2025.

York Region District School Board caretakers provide wellmaintained clean and safe environments in all of our schools and administrative locations. Within our Board the profession of caretaking encompasses not only the cleaning of our facilities but mechanical checks and minor maintenance of boilers air handling units building automation systems building hardware chillers and fire systems.

Summer Student Caretakers work a 40hour work week and start and finish times vary depending on the school location. Shadowing the role of our fulltime caretakers students are required to assist in the summer cleanup of our schools including such tasks as cleaning furniture and classrooms resurfacing floors grounds maintenance and moving furniture. All successful candidates will be required to provide and wear steeltoed footwear.

  • To be determined various locations across York Region.
  • Please Note: Locations are assigned based upon need and availability and can be within any of York Regions geographic areas: Georgina; East Gwillimbury; Newmarket; Aurora; Richmond Hill; Stouffville; Markham; King and Vaughan.


Major Responsibilities:

A position in Caretaking Services with the York Region District School Board can encompass a wide variety of physical duties and responsibilities. Listed below in no specific order is a sampling of the types of tasks you will be required to perform as a Caretaker.

  • Cleaning and sanitizing washrooms.
  • Removing garbage from classrooms lunchrooms shops and washrooms.
  • Recycling.
  • Sweeping dry mopping wet mopping or vacuuming floors.
  • Cleaning or removing spots from carpets.
  • Washing tables desks shelving cupboards etc.
  • Cleaning blackboards and whiteboards.
  • Performing outside maintenance including grass cutting garden cleanup and litter pickup.


In doing such tasks you will be:

  • required to use chemicals and be aware of the safety requirements in the handling of such chemicals;
  • exposed to dust;
  • required to lift and carry books boxes and other heavy materials; and
  • helping to make a clean and healthy working and learning environment for students and staff.

Important Information for CUPE 1734 Members:

LA.11.7 Those twelve 12 month employees filling vacancies as a result of their applying to a job posting are to remain twelve 12 months at their position. Ten 10 month employees are to remain in their position until the end of the school year. This requirement can be waived with permission from the Superintendent responsible for Human Resource Services. This does not prevent employees from applying for a position or from applying for a promotion during the twelve 12 month period.

As a condition of employment and In accordance with the Education Act anyone seeking employment or wanting to volunteer must provide a satisfactory police record check. A Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) must be completed by the police services in the jurisdiction in which you reside this is based on your home address (only accepted by police services within Canada); must be satisfactory to the YRDSB and completed within six 6 months prior to the scheduled start date. It is the candidates responsibility to provide the results to the Board upon instruction.

We will accept satisfactory PVSCs that name any other school board and other employers (daycare centers OCT and employers that would require a police check for vulnerable persons) in Ontario and obtained within the last six 6 months.
