General summary/purpose: As directed by and/or in assistance of higherlevel plumbing mechanics/supervisor/Journeyman performs maintenance installation and repair work on plumbing equipment systems and components. This work is performed under close supervision and using the tools and techniques of plumbing technology.
This position is designed as a four year structured apprenticeship program as reflected in the job title of the various levels:
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Works with Plumbing to support inspections and maintenance performed on plumbing systems to ensure safety and functionality
Reads and interprets basic schematic and construction drawings service manuals and other technical documents to make recommendations to Plumbing for relevant intervention.
Follows instructions provided by blueprints drawings written materials work orders and oral instructions.
Works with the Plumbing to identify analyze diagnose and resolve routine and complex plumbing equipment problems and component conditions.
Adhere to all applicable requirements including safety standards and local codes
Interpret diagrams blueprints and other related drawings and works with Plumbing to identify solutions or plan needed repairs
Supports the inventory and supply tracking process along with equipment tools and machinery
Communicate with Journeyworker Plumbing Facilities leadership other related trades and coworkers effectively to promote efficiency
Works directly with the Journeyworker Plumbing to gain knowledge skills and insight on effective practices and build subject matter knowledge
Attends all additional training related to the JHU Apprenticeship Program.
Requisitions inhouse stock items.
Requests nonstock items for purchase subject to supervisor approval.
Observes and utilizes trade practices National Plumbing Code and supervisor directions to shape appropriate actions
Supports Plumbing in planning and estimating the materials and labor required to perform demand work and construction projects as requested.
Works with Plumbing and other related trades experts to perform work within reasonable lengths of time as measured against trade industry or engineered standards.
Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
High school diploma or equivalent
2 to 4 years of directly related experience or successful completion of a preapprenticeship program based on the progression of the apprenticeship program.
Preferred qualifications:
Must be able to effectively communicate with supervisors coworkers and departmental clients
Possesses the ability to solve problems and manage information effectively
Must be able to complete tasks based on predetermined timelines and deadlines
Special knowledge skills and abilities:
Advanced knowledge of plumbing techniques planning estimating codes procedures and materials as demonstrated by passing a master plumbing certification exam administered by a local or state government.
Applies high level of plumbing and safety knowledge indicated herein.
Safely uses tools and equipment
Knowledge of safety rules procedures and practices including the proper use of safety equipment as defined by OSHA and industry standards.
Identifies and avoids hazards as indicated by warning labels signage lights and other warning devices.
Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:
Active engagement and required participation in the JHU Plumbing Apprenticeship Program including both onthejob and classroom training responsibilities.
Any specific physical requirements for the job:
Works in shop and mechanical area environments with exposure to dust heat cold noise and fumes.
Work may be performed outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures and other weather conditions.
Works within confined spaces as needed.
Works at heights of up to 30 feet above surface using ladders lifts and equipment.
Work requires ability to stand walk or sit for extended periods of time.
Work requires ability to lift push pull move transport and position tools equipment and materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
Work requires the use of protective safety devices including but not limited to safety glasses gloves hearing protection infection prevention apparel/apparatus back belt.
Work requires high visual acuity.
Work requires high level of manual dexterity.
