Job Description
Senior Electrical Designer
Cedar Rapids IA
Your Role at BSI
Our Electrical Engineering team has many years of experience designing power distribution systems for clients in many different industries. Our Electrical Designers work closely with our fullservice team to ensure a fully integrated design package of the highest quality is provided. They assess client needs and create designs that ensure Code compliance and personnel safety while achieving the clients desired goals. Project scopes will range from full facility and process designs for greenfield projects to retrofits and upgrades of equipment in existing sites.
Responsibilities and Scope
- Gathers field data and develops and supervises the use of design criteria documents(s) to meet the project objectives
- Ensures quality and technical accuracy of project deliverables
- Follows the BSI Standard Operating Procedures and Client Standards
- Identifies necessary content for a complete design drawing package
- With minimal supervision performs or ensures all the necessary calculations and design effort to prepare drawings and deliverables
- Ensures disciplines design is accurate and coordinated within the 2D drawings and/or 3D model and/or site scans
- Delegates work and supervises Designers on a project
- Manages disciplines schedule and budget objectives on assigned projects
- Assists in cost estimating
- Provides clear direction to team of project scope schedule budget and expectations of quality
- With supervision write and produce additional projectbased documents; including but not limited to studies and project notes
- Participates in construction support startup and commissioning efforts
- Identifies individual training needs and goals receives training from others and may attend outside seminars and mentors others
- Develops and carries out specific training sessions for others
- Performs design of low voltage 600V and below) power distribution systems design of medium voltage systems is desired but not required
- Assists in short circuit/arc flash/coordination and load studies and in detailed checking of the entire electrical design package
- Performs the design of MCCs including single lines and layout of MCCs and the design of motor controls including hardwired PLC and DCS systems
- Performs the specification of low voltage distribution equipment the design of electrical heat tracing and lighting systems and the design of grounding and lightning protection systems
- Supports obtaining planning and/or building regulations approval
- Performs the design of cable tray and conduit systems and the design of special systems including telephone data fire alarm and communication
- Interfaces with other design discipline counterparts project management and client as needed
- Considers other disciplines and overall project requirements during the project lifecycle
- Participates in interactive planning sessions to ensure scope schedule costs and quality are aligned to project objectives
- Participates in multidiscipline squad checks of deliverables before issuance
- Continually monitors and communicates forecasted staffing requirements for the assigned projects
- Strives to achieve the targeted billability goals for position
- Executes assigned tasks to support business development; may participate in sales presentations
- Provides regular updates of individual marketing resume
- When requested provides timely peer feedback to formal performance reviews
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma required
- 10 years of industry experience
- Proficient in AutoCAD
- Proficient with Revit and reviewing designs in 3D models
- Proficient written and oral communication skills
- Good presentation skills
- Strong decision making and leadership skills
- Ability to set priorities and manage multiple tasks
- Positive conflict resolution skills
- Possess a solid understanding of the National Electrical Code and the hazardous area classification requirements
- Familiarity with MCCs PDPs switchgear switchboards and other industrial power equipment
Desired Qualifications
- Associate Electrical Engineering Technology Degree and/or Computer Drafting and Design Degree preferred but not required
- Knowledge of IECC design requirements
- Industrial power distribution design experience
- Familiarity with Visual or other lighting calculation software
- Familiarity with medium voltage power distribution
- Knowledge of EasyPower and/or SKM PowerTools Software
