Job Description

Alfred Health

Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery improvement research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne from ambulatory to inpatient and home and communitybased services.

A 12months position is available in 2026for a registrar interested in Diving & Hyperbaric Medicine.

Successful applicants will be encouraged to enrol in the ANZCA diploma of advanced diving and hyperbaric medicine. Further information can be assessed at: Hyperbaric Service

The Alfred Hyperbaric Service is one of the worlds most active and technologically advanced hyperbaric units with a diverse and often complex case mix of acute and elective work. Critical care patient management experience is important and this position is therefore most suitable for mid to senior registrar level trainees in anaesthesia intensive care or emergency medicine although we are open to other applicants. The casemix includes acute decompression illness necrotising soft tissue infections cerebral arterial gas emboli acute ischaemic wounds as well as management of chronic wounds of varying etiology.

Further information for trainees wishing to combine 6 months of Diving & Hyperbaric Medicine with 6 months of Intensive Care or Emergency Medicine:

Alfred ICU

The Alfred Department of Intensive Care is a state of the art 65 bedded unit that treats approximately 3000 patients per year. The Alfred ICU provides Victorian state services for heart & lung transplantation (including paediatric lung transplantation) mechanical circulatory support extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) burns and hyperbaric medicine. The Alfred is one of two centres providing state services for adult trauma HIV and bone marrow transplantation (autologous and allogeneic). In addition most other surgical and medical subspecialties are represented in the casemix in keeping with the quaternary referral center status of The Alfred Hospital. There is an ICUbased echocardiography service with regular education sessions and opportunities for handson training.

The Alfred Department of Intensive Care is accredited for 2 core years of training as stipulated by the College of Intensive Care Medicine. There is an extensive consultant led education program including dedicated protected weekly teaching sessions for junior and senior registrars aimed at developing both technical and nontechnical skills. Alfred Emergency & Trauma Unit

The Alfred Emergency & Trauma Centre is a dynamic department which in addition to a high acuity case mix offers: 24 month accreditation by ACEM 5 hours protected teaching time each week highly successful Primary and Fellowship Exam training programs held every Wednesday Extensive emergency medicine research program. Sandringham Emergency Department is a busy urban district ED seeing approximately 43000 presentations per year offering trainees: 12 months accreditation by ACEM Paediatric presentations for Paediatric logbook.
