The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Fairbanks!

What you will be doing:
This position is a primary source of public information and public service in the Fairbanks ADF&G Public Information Center providing customers with information about the area explaining hunting and trapping regulations issuing permits and harvest tickets selling licenses and tags and collecting and recording harvest reports. The incumbent seals animals such as bears furs and sheep on a regular basis maintains vehicles and equipment and classifies analyses and summarizes harvest data. Fieldwork includes responding to nuisance wildlife situations acting as observer during aerial wildlife surveys and occasional wildlife capture work.

This position will serve as a permanent seasonal fulltime technician with the Division of Wildlife Conservation in Fairbanks and will be responsible for working as part of a team in the Regional Wildlife Information Center in Fairbanks. The Information Center assists people from around the world answering questions about hunting and trapping regulations hunting opportunities hunter education and wildlife viewing in the region and statewide. This position provides customer service to the public and assists with providing field and logistical support to research and management biologists throughout Interior and Northeast Alaska. This is currently a 11month seasonal position. If additional funding is available the position may be extended beyond 11 months otherwise the selected applicant will be on seasonal leave without pay. The position is overtime eligible.

The working environment you can expect:
The position is located at the ADF&G office at 1300 College Road in Fairbanks. The daily work environment involves effective communication and teamwork with office coworkers as well as regular use of a computer while assisting the public in person and over the phone at the information desk or in the laboratory at the Fairbanks office. Fieldwork is required throughout the season and may involve exposure to animals biting insects inclement weather firearms lowlevel aircraft flight and/or travel by boat or skiff. Aerial surveys are conducted in small aircraft maneuvering at low altitude for long periods of time in sometimes cold conditions.

This position may require field work which can involve exposure to large animals insects inclement weather low level flying in planes and helicopters travel by boat or skiff and contact with and chemicals used to immobilize wildlife.


Who we are looking for:

  • Experience providing high quality customer service to diverse groups including explaining complex regulations about hunting fishing and trapping in Alaska and dealing with sometimes agitated or angry customers.
  • Knowledge of the plants animals fish and habitats found in Alaska and ability to have discussions about these with hunters trappers fishers and wildlife viewers including assisting the public with human/wildlife interactions and intervening when necessary.
  • Experience handling large amounts of money maintaining accurate records recording and entering data accurately and following instructions and protocols. Also have experience using computer programs for data entry analysis and archiving.
  • Working with dead sometimes stinky animal carcasses or animal parts or handling live animals from big game like moose to squirrels or birds including trapping hazing and euthanizing when necessary while ensuring the safety of yourself your team and the animals involved.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and as an individual including tasks associated with office laboratory or remote field work.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher guide or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1 a GED (general educational development); 2 completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours 16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3 acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4 highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture biology ichthyology microbiology ornithology and zoology.
