Job Description

Summary

TheDepartment ofAdultandJuvenile Detentions(DAJD) Financeofficeisaseeking detailorientedindividual tofill one 1 Career ServicePayroll Specialist position.The primary focus of this role is to ensure timely accurate payroll processing and to provide excellent customer service for employees of DAJD. This position requires a high level of attention to detail to ensure payroll is processed accurately and in accordance with King County policies negotiated collective bargaining agreements and applicable laws while consistently meeting deadlines.

The Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention (DAJD) contributes to the public safety of the people of King County and Washington State by operating safe secure and humane detention facilities and community corrections programs. This recruitment will create an eligibility list which may be used to fill future Career Service
Term Limited Temporary or Special Duty Assignment Payroll Specialist vacancies.

Job Duties

The job description is an overview and is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. It is not to be an exhaustive list of all the functions and tasks required of this position.

  • ProcessDAJD biweekly payrollthroughtheRoster Management System (RMS) intoPeopleSoft interpret data and apply appropriate codes; review analyze and verify data to ensure compliance with multiple collective bargaining agreements King County policies and State and Federal laws.
  • Review and correct code applicationapply premium paysdetermine appropriate pay type for special leave situations set up and maintain additional pays and deductions.
  • Processemployeecashoutrequests;calculateandprocessmanual retirementreporting.
  • Trackandreportleaveconversions.
  • Calculateandprocessretro pays.
  • Update employee job personal and payroll information in RMS and PeopleSoft keeping systems in sync.
  • Calculateadjustandtrackservicedates.
  • Performreconciliationsfornumerouspayrollactivities.
  • Run PeopleSoft queries; create and maintain spreadsheets for tracking reconciliation and reporting purposes.
  • Review payroll data for accuracy; respond to employee inquiries related to pay leave and policies clearly and concisely explaining complex pay transactions.
  • Provide payroll expertise and procedural instruction to timekeepers supervisors and employees.
  • Manage incoming documents identifying high priority and/or time sensitive matters.
  • File and maintain payroll documentation.
  • Review Personnel Orders to align systems accounting and position information.
  • Conduct New Employee Orientation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within scope and area of assignment.

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS:
The successful candidate for this position will have a minimum of two 2 recent years experience performing professional level payroll processing and be able to quickly demonstrate knowledge and skill in the following areas:

  • Experience with PeopleSoft or other HR Information System/Payroll software

  • Strong attention to detail with demonstrated analytical problem solving and research skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize prioritize and manage a demanding workload consistently meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.

  • Proven ability to effectively and positively work within a team environment and maintain professionalism in all situations

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and act with discretion

  • Proven ability to follow oral and written instructions

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain regular reliable and timely attendance

  • Intermediate proficiency skill level with Microsoft Office 365 Excel word and Outlook

  • Exceptional communication and customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing

  • Knowledge of basic accounting and mathematics

MOST DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
  • Experience processing payroll for 200 or more employee

  • Payroll processing for a workforce with multiple unions and 24/7 schedules

  • Knowledge of payroll compliance laws including FLSA FMLA Washington Paid Family Medical Leave and Washington Paid Medical Leave

  • Public Safety experience preferred

WORK LOCATION/SCHEDULE: Work location is the King County Courthouse 513 3rd Avenue Room E245 Seattle WA 98004. MF schedule 40 hours per week. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Schedule assignments are subject to the staffing needs of the department and bargaining unit bidding process as applicable.
