The Patient Shuttle Driver is responsible for safely transporting patients and visitors to and from various locations on facility grounds or designated offsite locations. The driver will assist patients with boarding and disembarking including helping with wheelchairs or other mobility aids. Safety is a priority and the driver must adhere to company policies procedures state laws traffic laws and safety regulations to ensure the wellbeing of all passengers.
The driver will conduct regular checks on the shuttle vehicle ensuring it is in good working condition cleaning it disinfecting it and reporting any mechanical issues. Professionalism and compassion are key when interacting with patients and visitors. The driver will coordinate with hospital staff and affiliated partners to ensure timely transport for appointments emergencies and other needs.
The driver will operate a vehicle equipped with wheelchair tiedowns lifts and/or ramps. The role may require lifting heavy loads depending on patient needs and performing tasks such as climbing kneeling stooping bending twisting and reaching at various levels. The driver must be able to work on uneven surfaces and maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations. Additional duties may be assigned by management to support department operations.
The Patient Shuttle Driver must possess a valid Minnesota Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement and a clean driving record. A Medical Examiners DOT certification is required and the driver must be registered in the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. The driver must have and maintain a valid drivers license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with Mayo Clinic policy or the driver must obtain the necessary certifications within 3 months of hire. Previous experience as a commercial bus driver or in a healthcare setting is preferred. The driver must be familiar with traffic laws safety regulations and organizational guidelines to ensure passenger safety. Strong communication and interpersonal skills along with a compassionate and professional attitude are necessary. The driver must also be proficient in English with the ability to read and write clearly for communication and recordkeeping.
The ability to remain calm in emergency situations is required. Flexibility in working hours including early mornings evenings and some holidays is expected. A high school diploma or GED is required and additional training in patient transport is a plus.
