Job Description

Overview

Regularly performs laboratory procedures in the assigned scientific sections of the Clinical Lab and/or Emergency Department. Performs necessary quality control procedures and maintains records. Troubleshoots instrument problems. Performs and records instrumentation. Performs other clinical and clerical duties as needed. Regularly utilizes the laboratory computer for various aspects of daily work. Verifies completion of work by various computer programs. Communicates with nursing and other hospital personnel regarding laboratory procedures results and overdue tests. Runs and completes all testing that is permitted under the licensure by the State of CA.

Responsibilities

Regularly performs laboratory procedures in the assigned scientific sections of the Clinical Lab.

  • As a generalist; performs all routine and other procedures.
  • Correct procedures done and 100 accuracy within procedure limits and turnaround as stated in the procedure manual.
  • Pending lists are reviewed with proper hand off to the next shift.
  • Performs follows policies for and documents specimen rejection.
  • Works only within the scope of training and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the CLS in charge supervisor or director.

Performs necessary quality control procedures and maintains records.

  • 100 compliance with QC protocols for running controls and accepting results.
  • The CLS supervisor is alwaysnotified of out of control discrepant or unexpected results in a timely manner.
  • Records are accurate and up to date.
  • Maintains inventory of reagents and supplies.

Participates in training of new employees.

  • Participation as instructed by supervisor.
  • Able to complete assignments while closely supervising the trainee.

Troubleshoots instrument problems. Performs and records instrumentation.

  • Troubleshoots with the help of the hotline.
  • Troubleshoots with the instrument manual.
  • Able to independently detect and resolve instrument issues.
  • Offers to assist in instrument repairs.
  • 100 compliance with instrument maintenance procedures.

Performs other clinical and clerical duties as needed.

  • Demonstrates the ability and willingness to perform clerical functions at the reception area.
  • Able to long in specimens without errors.
  • All tests completed are properly charged.
  • Maintains records in the Laboratory accurately and to Joint Commission Standards.
  • Checks in Pathology specimens corrects any incomplete orders and verifies proper preservatives.

Regularly utilizes the laboratory computer for various aspects of daily work. Verifies completion of work by various computer programs.

  • Familiar with all pertinent computer procedures and contingency procedures.
  • Verifies that all assigned work is completed 100 of the time.

Communicates with nursing and other hospital personnel regarding laboratoryprocedures results etc.

  • Communicates in a clear courteous and professional manner.

  • Follows established hospital and department policies.
  • No more than 2 written substantiatedcomplaints representing a breach of policy procedure or professional behavior since last evaluation.

  • Participates in group projects and staff meetings with suggestions that enhance the work environment and increase productivity. Communicates well with supervisor reporting problems with equipment supplies or procedures. Requests assistance as appropriate.

  • Consistently projects positive professional image throughappearance and behavior.
  • Completes assigned work within shift.

  • As observed by representatives of management all interactions are conducted in a professional manner.
  • Verbal and written feedback from patients family members/significant others medical staff visitors and coworkers indicates behavior conducive to positiveguest relations.
  • Consistently exhibits appropriate phone protocol (e.g. assists coworkers when need is observed or upon request offers constructive suggestions rather than complaints).
  • Consistently displays cheerful and positive attitude.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Completes annual safety updates within established time frames.
  • Completes general and departmental orientation within established time frames.
  • Attends 100 of mandatory inservice programs.
  • Maintains licensure/certification as appropriate.
  • Attends 75 of staff meetings or reads and initialsminutes.
  • Keeps up with reading memos without reminders.
  • Does continuing education programs on time and with good test scores.

Performance Improvement

  • Consistently strives to understand anticipate and meet the needs expectations and satisfaction levels of patients and other customers.
  • Errors inefficiencies and inaccuracies are brought to managements attention with suggestions for improvement.
  • Develops innovative solutions to departmental problems.
  • Identifies and implements methods of controlling cost or generating revenue while providing maximum value to both the patient/customer and the hospital.
  • Maximizes efficiency in all departmental operations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: AA Degree in a California approved specialty.
  • Successful completion of Medical Laboratory Technician Internship.
  • Minimum Experience: 6 months laboratory experience preferred.
  • Required Certification/Registration: CA Licensed Medical Laboratory Technician.
