Job Summary
To assist in the maintenance and operation of the animal experimentation/research facilities. Responsible for the performance of routine nontechnical tasks. The training schedule for the Animal Technician is MF 8am5pm. Once adequate training is accomplished (a few weeks depending on experience) new technicians are required to work the weekends and take 2 days off during the week.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Review comprehend and comply with all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area. Monitor daily animal health/welfare while performing daily animal health observations. Perform animal husbandry duties to maintain quality/health of research animals includes daily bottle/cage checks; provide appropriate food/water; cage changing/cleaning. Assist with restraint handling and manipulation of various animal species as assigned by the onsite supervisor. Dispose of animal carcasses following established procedures. Observe & report problems involving animal care equipment and environmental support systems. Maintain accurate departmental animal housing/support area record keeping. Record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols. Receive inspect and put away received incoming animals; ensure and provide for sentinel animals in each rodent housing area. Operate equipment and use supplies according to safety guidelines. Sanitize facilities animal housing units and ancillary animal care equipment. Perform general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures.
