Position Function:
Onsite leadership of a distributed team developing innovative intelligent fisheries monitoring systems. Lead machine learning algorithm advancement and development for realtime systems for automated fish detection and species identification.

Department Profile:
The Northern Gulf Institute (NGI) is a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Institute comprised of six academic institutions that are geographically distributed across the U.S. Gulf Coast states. The six NGI member institutions are Mississippi State University (lead) the University of Southern Mississippi Florida State University Louisiana State University the University of Alabama in Huntsville and the Dauphin Island Sea Laboratory. Together with NOAA and in support of their strategic plan NGI conducts research on interconnections among Gulf of Mexico environments habitats resources and people and engages in outreach to help others learn about and make decisions based on these interconnections.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop automated techniques (using machine learning techniques) to analyze video collections of fish to determine tracks (thus number of fish) and species.
In collaboration with others compile write and publish technical engineering documentation to guide future Electronic Monitoring (EM) providers and researchers for development and deployment of future monitoring systems that integrate real time automation.
Disseminate results in archival literature via journals and conferences.
Disseminate results via oral presentations at conferences and local meetings.
Other duties as assigned.
The work location will be the main campus of Mississippi State University adjacent to Starkville MS. Some extended travel especially to NOAA/NMFS SEFSC labs in Pascagoula MS and/or Galveston TX is likely.
Minimum Qualifications:
Research Scientist I Ph.D. Generally within three years after receiving their
Ph.D. and with limited scientific research experience
Research Scientist II Ph.D. Three to seven years of relevant experience beyond
the Ph.D. level and with very significant professional accomplishments
Research Scientist III Ph.D. More than seven years of relevant experience
beyond the Ph.D. and with extremely significant professional accomplishments
Senior Research Scientist Ph.D. Individuals well beyond the Ph.D. that have
demonstrated outstanding sustained and extraordinary professional accomplishments as well as professional leadership
Preferred Qualifications:
Appointment to this position requires an earned doctorate in computer engineering computer science electrical engineering or a closely related field.
At 2 years postdoctoral experience in development and deployment of machine learning algorithms for fish movement / detection or similar application areas.
Indepth knowledge of imagebased machine learning methods.
Good working ability with C and GitHub.
Indepth knowledge of highperformance computing systems.
Understanding of fish physical characteristics.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
An earned doctorate in computer engineering computer science electrical engineering or a closely related field.
At 2 years postdoctoral experience in development and deployment of machine learning algorithms for fish movement / detection or similar application areas.
Indepth knowledge of imagebased machine learning methods.
Good working ability with C and GitHub.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Occasional and/or light lifting required. Limited exposure to elements such as heat cold noise dust dirt chemicals etc. but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts bruises etc.
Routine deadlines usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressure from persons other than immediate supervisor.
Job frequently requires standing walking climbing or balancing stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling and lifting up to 50 pounds.
