Job DescriptionChronicle Heritage seeks a Paleontological Field Director to join our quickly growing team of experienced motivated professionals in Utah Texas Wyoming Oregon New Mexico Arizona Florida Michigan Wisconsin and Virginia . The Field Director will provide leadership for the paleontology field mitigation crew in support of ongoing transmission renewable energy transportation and federal and state inventory projects. Some travel is required with the potential for extended overnight hotel stays. Compensation for travel and lodging is provided on a projectbyproject basis. Pay rate is dependent upon experience.Hire Type:Full Time (hourly) Schedule:40 hours overtime when necessary based on project needs Location:FieldBased Utah Texas Wyoming Oregon New Mexico Arizona Florida Michigan Wisconsin and Virginia Responsibilities - Oversee field laboratory and reporting activities for one or more projects at a time
- Lead field survey crews and oversee compliance monitors
- Implement federal regulations pertaining to paleontological resources
- Work both independently and in a team environment
- Travel including overnight hotel stays as necessary
- Work with the team leads and project managers to successfully complete projects
Physical and Mental Requirements and Work Environment - Regular fieldwork or onsite inspections are required which necessitates ability to frequently travel/drive a vehicle (sight hearing and manual manipulation of driving mechanisms) cognitive ability to plan travel use maps or GPS navigation systems.
- May require ambulation and movement to enable walking or hiking 10 miles per day on rough and/or hazardous terrain and occasional climbing crouching kneeling balancing on rough terrain. Fieldwork may involve exposure to conditions of rain sun heat wind dust etc. with exposure to animals plants wet conditions biting insects poison oak etc. May require use of respiratory equipment.
- Some fieldwork may require carrying loads up to 25 pounds or work around heavy construction equipment.
- Vision is required to observe environmental phenomena and record and translate observations into text (either keyboard entry on a computer or dictation and audio translation of recording to Standard English scientific text).
- Mental requirements include ability to organize ones own work or that of crew members; ability to recognize and observe scientific data and analyze data as well as ability to perform calculations. Must also be able to observe social and professional interactions and respond appropriately.
- Some work is performed primarily in an indoor environment and requires sustained sitting and use of fingers hands and arms to operate a computer and perform keyboard entry of data or document preparation (or equivalent with accommodation). Must also be able to operation standard office equipment (phone copy machine FAX machine etc.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications - Masters degree specializing in geology paleontology geoscience paleobiology or a closely related field
- 3 years of experience conducting paleontological construction monitoring
- Experience on BLM Projects
- Demonstrated leadership abilities
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
Required Qualifications - Bachelors degree specializing in geology paleontology geoscience paleobiology or a closely related field
- 3 years of experience conducting paleontological investigations in Utah Texas Wyoming Oregon New Mexico Arizona Florida Michigan Wisconsin and Virginia
- Knowledge of federal regulations pertaining to paleontological resources and statespecific knowledge
- 3 years of experience conducting paleontological resource surveys identifying fossils in the field fossil collection and laboratory preparation
- Ability to be listed as a Field Agent on federal paleontological use permits.
- Ability to travel with the potential for overnight stays sometimes in remote locations rough terrain and challenging weather conditions
