This position is open to all Applicants.




The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 (Creel Technician) located in Sitka!


What you will be doing:

This position will work as a team member of the Southeast Alaska Marine Sport Harvest Survey (Creel) Project. This crew interviews returning sport anglers and collects biological samples from salmon and groundfish. The information collected is used to estimate the effort and harvest of sport caught species and provide valuable information to guide the management of Southeast Alaska fisheries. This position may also assist area management staff with local area office tasks/duties.

The mission of the Division of Sport Fish is to protect maintain and improve the States sport fisheries. The Division of Sport Fish conducts assessments of salmon and groundfish to assist management biologists with inseason abundance estimates used to manage Alaskas fisheries. This position is vital to the data gathering and success of the project which enables the fisheries to be managed at a high level.

The working conditions you can expect:

This position is located in Sitka Alaska. This position will collect information from returning sport anglers and sample their catch as they return to harbors and boat launches. This position works independently or in small teams.

  • The technician must be available for irregular work hours including weekends and holidays. This position is eligible for overtime.

  • This position is physically demanding and requires bending lifting and walking up and down docks for extended periods sometimes in inclement weather.

The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following desired strengths:

  • Strong communication skills good organizational skills and basic math skills.

  • Attention to detail necessary for collecting quality data and biological samples.

  • Ability to work independently in a selfmotivated and selfdirected manner.

  • Familiarity with Alaska sport fisheries and sport fish regulations.

  • Ability to identify the common species caught in Southeast Alaska sport fisheries.

Special Note:
A valid drivers license is required.

This position may be in possession of or have access to firearms/ammunition.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
OR
Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
OR
Six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory.

Special Requirements:
Exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1 a GED (general educational development); 2 completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours 16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3 acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4 highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required high school diploma or equivalent within three months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
