Reporting to the Director for Student Retention the First Year Program Coordinator develops the FirstYear Programs student activities that promote a studentoriented learning environment and foster student success and retention. The Coordinator provides content expertise in collegelevel skills courses instructs collegelevel skills courses and refers firstyear students for other services such as tutorial assistance academic advising and counseling. THIS IS A GRANT FUNDED STAFF POSITION.
Essential Duties:
- Plans develops and implements student development activities for firstyear students throughout the academic year using student learning outcomes to facilitate learning promote greater understanding of campus resources foster positive relationships with faculty and staff and provide social opportunities that bridge the worlds inside and outside the classroom.
- Effectively plans develops and implements the orientation process each semester and summer to help firstyear students prepare for transition into college life. Evaluates the orientation process using student learning outcomes to continuously improve and enhance the firstyear experience. Plans student orientation activities that welcome students to campus introduce them to educational opportunities available to them and resolve basic uncertainties about how to get started and engage fully in the college experience.
- Measures and reports results of assigned program efforts.
- Provides individualized outreach to students based on identified risk factors; assisting them in developing individual plans for success.
- Effectively interacts and collaborates with Academic Success team members and other University personnel.
- Reviews and ensures compliance with rules and regulations governing student activities in accordance with Shaw University policies and procedures.
- Ensures the confidentiality of all personal information relating to students and personnel; limits exposure to confidential information on a jobrelated and needtoknow basis only.
- Represents Shaw University in the most positive manner with prospective former and current students clients suppliers and the community we serve.
- Develop and implement retention programs by following up on existing initiatives and identifying new outreach opportunities.
- Review student records for retention issues; follow up on progress through personal contact and correspondence.
- Coach students through administrative barriers that are preventing them from progressing towards their degree.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
- Masters Degree from an accredited college or university required or appropriate combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 3 years related experience as an academic program manager at a university or college preferably in directing FirstYear Programs.
- Establish priorities and work in an organized manner with an emphasis on detail and accuracy.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments and meet competing deadlines.
- Working knowledge of a student information system and/or knowledge of microcomputer/software applications is a must.
- Ability to work independently without close supervision and as a member of a team.

Physical Demands
The work environment is an athletic and office setting which requires the ability to travel much of the time work
long hours including evenings and weekends be physically active able to lift up to 50 pounds and have the
ability to demonstrate specific skills.
