Job Description

Overview


The Lead Ultrasound Technologist performs sonographic examinations to locate evaluate and record critical functional pathological and anatomical data while leading staff in the department. The position serves as a procedure specialist and leads a team of technologists in Ultrasound.

This positions work location is onsite only.

Responsibilities


Leadership
* Provide team leadership to staff in the department.

* Act at a resource and first point of escalation resource to address the needs of staff patients and families.

* Serve as a procedure specialist and subject matter expert on modality and its process and procedures.

* Acts as the daytoday lead for operations of the department and assures efficient operation of workflow of the department.

* Responsible for maintaining the work schedule workflow and staff schedules for the department.

* Participates in the hiring process performance evaluation and handling of issues and in problem solving for the team.

Patient Care
* Obtains patient history.

* Educates patients/families regarding procedures and/or treatment to be performed as well as risk factors and prevention.

* Positions patients appropriately for the applicable radiographic procedure.

* Performs radiographic procedures and analysis according to departmental guidelines.

* Develops and evaluates radiographic results for technical quality such as density contrast definition and distortion.

* Applies learned methodologies with independent judgment according to established policies and procedures.

* Performs prescribed procedures in accordance with established policies.

* Maintains infection prevention standards.

* Explains standard procedures and answers patient questions.

* Prepares cleans adjusts inspects and maintains equipment.

* Produces quality images and prepares/presents them with other pertinent patient information for timely interpretation.

* Prepares and maintains accurate documentation archiving imaging data as needed or required.

* Collaborates with physicians and other medical professionals.

Modality Specific
* Performs sonographic examinations to locate evaluate and record critical functional pathological and anatomic data.

* Operates ultrasonic equipment to produce images of organs and tissues for diagnostic purposes.

* Utilizes transabdominal technology to monitor patient or fetus health detect or monitor tumors/cysts and diagnose cardiovascular conditions.

* May assist with vascular ultrasound procedures and ultrasound guided biopsies and other guided procedures.
Quality
* Adheres to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

* Performs and evaluates equipment quality control measurements demonstrating ability to troubleshoot and notifying appropriate personnel to maintain equipment performance.

* Assures the efficient operation of workflow of the department and monitors and maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and materials to ensure noninterruption of service.

* Ensures that the sonography examination results meet the facility standard for Quality Assurance before findings are released for interpretation.

* Provide oversight for the assessment of sonography examinations performed within the facility for technical and image quality and accuracy.

* Document any incidental findings that might impact patient safety or patient care and provide that information to the interpreting physician.

* Exercise responsibility for the maintenance and accuracy of facility reports database records and logs.

* Provide oversight of the system management for the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACs).

Education
* Keeps updated on the knowledge of human anatomy physiology and imaging equipment.

* Educates patients/families regarding procedure and/or treatment to be performed as well as risk factors and prevention.

* Participates in creating and sustaining a learning environment supported by evidenced based practice and research.

* Participates in the mentoring and education of technologists and students.

* Works with peers and other health care providers. Participates in ongoing inservice and educational seminars.

* Assist with the orientation and training of new staff.

Compliance/Safety
* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employees area of responsibility.

* If required for position ensures all certifications and/or licenses are uptodate and valid prior to expiration dates.

* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job specific training in the specified time frame.

* Responsible for reporting any safety related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of an accredited School of Ultrasonography Required
Applied Associates of Science degree in Radiological Technology Preferred
Bachelors of Radiology or Science or related field Preferred


Certification & Licensures:

American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) Required with at least two specialties
RVT Preferred
BLS (American Heart Assoc. Required
Fingerprint Clearance Card application number Required upon hire
Fingerprint Clearance Card Required within 90 days of hire
Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for the roles assigned by their departmental leader.

Experience:

Minimum 3 years experience in ultrasound in an acute care setting Required
Minimum 1 year experience in a team lead or supervisory role Required
Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must understand computers and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
