Job Description

Job Summary
This position is part of a dynamic and growing adolescent and young adult AYA cancer program at Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah. This position provides information resources and navigation services to adolescent and young adult AYA cancer patients and their loved ones. There are two levels in the Health Educator position. Health Educator I: Candidate must have a BS in health promotion or related field or equivalency 2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Ability to demonstrate entry level competence in the 7 Areas of Responsibilities for Health Education or 10 Essential Functions of Public Health. Health Educator II: Candidate must have a BS in health promotion or related field and four or more years of health education experience or equivalency 2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Must also possess and maintain certification as a CHES MCHES or CPH . Ability to demonstrate workinglevel professional knowledge in the 7 Areas of Responsibilities for Health Education or 10 Essential Functions of Public Health. Responsibilities
Description and Duties: Patient Navigation/Education Assesses health education needs of AYA patients and their loved ones. Educates directs and orients patients towards available and appropriate care resources agencies organizations and institutions. Documents encounters in the medical record. Coordinates with research teams and facilitates behavioral interventions with AYA patients and their loved ones. Learns and contributes to evidencebased practice by attending cancer conferences reading current literature participating in networking discussions nationally and completing continuing education classes assignments and projects. Assists in the AYA program development activities and operation. Problem Solving: Use logic to identify appropriate theories to underpin program development Think critically to analyze issues and identify alternate courses of action Training/Mentoring/Growth: After hire the successful candidate will participate in patient navigator training and mentoring before seeing patients and their loved ones. As the program grows there may be opportunities for professional advancement. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in a healthrelated field or equivalency required; masters degree Certified Health Education Specialist CHES certification and/or fluency in Spanish preferred. The successful candidate will have exceptional leadership problem solving organizational collaboration and communication skills. They will also have qualities of compassion respect and reliability. Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills required. This position is patientsensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. We protect our patients coworkers and community by requiring all patientsensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.
