Job Description

Berkeley Labs Information Technology Division IT has an opening for a Science IT Department Head to join their Leadership Team!

In this exciting role you will have a unique opportunity to lead the organization responsible for supporting scientific and research computing data management scientific consulting and research support at one of the worlds leading research institutions. You will play a pivotal role in driving the Laboratorys strategic approach to providing internal HPC services scientific storage AI infrastructure and cloud solutions that enable groundbreaking scientific discoveries. As the ScienceIT Department Head and member of the CIOs senior leadership team you will set the strategic vision for how ScienceIT can accelerate our scientific endeavors and directly impact hundreds of research projects and teams. We are seeking a visionary and strategic leader dedicated to using computing and technology to transform and accelerate open science.

What You Will Do:

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for the ScienceIT organization aligning its services with the Laboratorys scientific mission.
  • Manage and oversee the delivery of HPC services scientific storage AI infrastructure scientific virtualization container hosting and cloud provider management for Berkeley Lab and under the direction of Campus ResearchIT Leadership similar services for the University of California Berkeley.
  • Lead a consulting team that assists researchers in locating and effectively utilizing scientific computing resources including the use of AI tools for coding and scientific discovery.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders including the National Energy Research Scientific Center NERSC Energy Sciences Network ESnet Private Investigators (PIs) and Scientific Division Directors; and with close collaborators such as UC Berkeley for shared scientific computing services
  • Serve as a key liaison with the Laboratorys Senior Leadership Team to develop compelling scientific computing service offerings.
  • Drive the longrange vision of ScienceIT identifying and recommending new and emerging technologies.
  • Supervise a staff of computer systems engineers and manage ongoing group activities and projects.
  • Prepare budgets determine resource allocation and maintain staffing to meet workload demands.

What is Required:

  • A Bachelors Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Computer Science Engineering or a related discipline and a minimum of 10 years of related technical experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated management experience including a proven track record of building a highperforming team supervising a technically advanced staff of IT professionals and growing progressively larger and more complex technical groups in a complex computer systems or networking unit.
  • Experience crafting longterm strategic and tactical approaches for HPC and/or related services.
  • Demonstrated experience with large competitive bid procurement methods and including the ability to determine scientific computing resources services and costs from scientific requirements.
  • Strong project management skills including experience with the successful of high profile projects with a track record of getting things done with a sense of urgency.
  • Demonstrated collaboration experience collaborating with multiple stakeholders including the ability to work with scientific researchers to understand and shape their needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including experience organizing and presenting customer focused technical data reports and projects to audiences with varying degrees of technical expertise.

  • An Advanced Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Computer Science Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Salary Information: This position is expected to pay $223032 $272580 annually which fits within the full salary range of $198252 $334536 annually for job code C70.8. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidates qualification and experience including skills knowledge relevant education certifications and aligned with the internal peer group.

  • Work Modality: This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab 1 Cyclotron Road Berkeley CA 94720. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
