Job Description

Manages and directs the activities of a community education unit or department and supervises supervisory and professional staff members leading program delivery and development evaluation and implementation. Reviews and approves recommendations for programs.

Under the general direction of the Pacific AETC Director and the Pacific AETC PI the Pacific AETC Hawaii & USAffiliated Pacific Islands (HIAPI) Director develops implements manages and evaluates all aspects of the scope of work for the HIAPI a unit of the Department of Family and Community Medicine and a local Partner (LP) of the Pacific AIDS Education & Training Center (Pacific AETC). Major projects in the State of Hawaii American Samoa Guam the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Palau the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands include the:
  • Basic AETC training program which is focused on training technical assistance and other modalities to increase the capacity of community providers serving people at risk for and living with HIV; Practice Transformation projects in clinics serving people at risk for and living with HIV; and Interprofessional Education a project designed to work with faculty and students to integrate HIV into the team based care model.
  • Minority AIDS Initiative (MAI) community projects for training minority and minorityserving clinicians and
  • Ending the HIV Epidemic program and projects
  • Other projects through additional funding sources
The Director is responsible for independent oversight and monitoring of all project deliverables; provides lead specialty support and consultation to clinical faculty; and serves as a team leader and regional coordinator for multiple complex HIV/AIDS educational training and capacitybuilding technical assistance activities delivered in the region. The Pacific AETC HIAPI Director also has additional responsibilities for activities at the Pacific AETC Regional Office such as developing a practicetransformation protocol or developing standard operating procedures; Oversight of funder/contract relationships as needed; Regional conferences; oversight for Pacific AETC HIAPI events; orienting new LP staff; supporting Interprofessional Education at participating Health Professions Programs; and leadership for adult learning expertise. The Director will also be responsible for resource development including research investigation and development of new funding opportunities for the HIAPI geographic region.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $67000 $143800 (Annual Rate).

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a lead/supervisor/manager
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in HIV training and education curriculum development and evaluation or related experience
  • Skills to maintain effective professional relationships with department managers as well as external clients and instructors.
  • Strong knowledge of community education technical education and / or training and development programs.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and strategies for implementing nextgeneration learning technologies is require in order to create and produce innovative or cuttingedge training programs that result in increased learning leading to changes in provider behavior in the clinical setting (e.g. integrating interactive teaching methods into core curriculum models and casebased teaching activities; providing education and technical assistance consultation to clinical faculty on adult learning theories and strategies)
  • Highly effective verbal written and interpersonal communication skills. Excellent presentation and group facilitation skills are essential. The Program Director must be able to effectively serve in a triple role of manager curriculum developer and trainer serving as lead facilitator for large conferencestyle programming.
  • Highly effective management skills including strengths in directing and developing staff members. Leadership skills are essential in identifying initiating and developing new collaborative relationships with strategic partners; providing project coordination to multisite projects; providing effective supervision to project staff.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development principles and methodologies for applying educational theory in practice is required in order to develop educational programming and materials that are suitable for a variety of audiences address a wide range of complicated clinical issues and provide stepwise instruction for trainers and facilitators.


    • Masters/Doctoral degree in education social work public health or related field
    • Highly effective skills to conduct needs assessment and program delivery. Knowledge of program evaluation methodologies standard survey research design and data analysis skills are required in order to develop and implement meaningful program evaluation strategies and evaluation instruments liking desired learning outcomes to training needs assessments and overall project goals.
    • Advanced knowledge of current treatment and prevention strategies for HIV/AIDS and current HIV/AIDS epidemiology data and trends is needed to 1 create and deliver educational programming and teaching materials that are accurate timely and effective; and 2 identify new potential training audiences and topics of clinical relevance
    • Knowledge of Academic Health Center policies and procedures relative to human resources contracts and grants and operations to effectively supervise staff and run programs
