Job Description

Working Title: International Student and Scholar Advisor

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the appropriate administrators of International Programs and Global Engagement the International Student and Scholar Advisor supports the coordination of services delivered to international students and scholars. The International Student and Scholar Advisor assists F1 students as a Designated School Official (DSO) with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) post admission/prearrival during studies and after graduation in all aspects of university life including academic/personal advising employment options immigration reporting and processing and federal agency requirements (SSA DMV IRS) to ensure F1 students maintain their immigration status in accordance with DHS and Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) rules and regulations. The International Student and Scholar Advisor is responsible for assisting with the administration of the J Visa Exchange/Nondegree program for the university. This program allows students to attend the university for 12 semesters on partner university onetoone exchanges and CSU systemwide International Program exchanges. Students from nonpartner universities can also study on the general NonDegree Student Program. These duties include serving as the primary J visa Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO); advising students on federal government state and CSU policies and procedures; and serving as liaison with staff and faculty of partner universities government agencies embassies and consulates.

The International Student and Scholar Advisor is responsible for assisting J1 students in maintaining their immigration status and ensuring the university remains in compliance with SEVIS and U.S. Department of State regulations. The International Student and Scholar Advisor assists in the operation of the International Research Scholar Program. Duties include liaising with Academic Affairs department chairs school deans faculty administrative and services offices and the U.S. State Department. The International Student and Scholar Advisor supports advising international faculty scholars on J visa immigration regulations university policies and procedures services and personal problems; and advising academic departments and faculty regarding immigration policies as they pertain to international scholars. Because the incumbent serves as advisor to matriculating students on F1 visas as well as all incoming J1 students and scholars (J2 dependents) it is imperative for the International Student and Scholar Advisor to have a working knowledge of federal government immigration policies pertaining to Student Exchange and Visitor Information System (SEVIS) F and J visa immigration regulations and procedures for the issuance of appropriate Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Status (I20s) and Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J1 status DS2019s) in order to independently research interpret and implement the complex immigration regulations which pertain to F and J visa programs.

FLSA:NonExempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range:$4482 per month to $4715 per month

The International Programs & Global Engagement department at Sacramento State serves as a comprehensive hub for global academic activities and international services. The department oversees international admissions for both graduate and undergraduate students while coordinating study abroad and exchange programs that enable educational experiences worldwide. Through its International Student & Scholar Services division the department provides essential support and resources to international students and scholars on campus. The Office of Global Initiatives particularly focuses on faculty and staff support managing international partnerships providing immigration assistance and facilitating the development of international agreements. They also coordinate the U.S. Scholar Fulbright Program and operate a passport service center. Through these combined services the department creates a robust infrastructure that connects Sacramento States academic community to global opportunities and resources.

Knowledge and Abilities: Working knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management.; research and interviewing techniques; principles of individual and group behavior; the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of the organization procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned; and the basic principles practices and major trends in the Student Services field to which assigned.

Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program and its relationship to the total campus operation; interpret and apply program rules and regulations; gather and analyze data; reason logically draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; present clear and concise information orally and in written reports; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty CSU administrators student organizations and other private and public agencies.

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level. Equivalent amounts of graduatelevel jobrelated education may be substituted for the required experience.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a fouryear college or university in one of the behavioral sciences public or business administration or a jobrelated field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the required knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a yearforyear basis.
