Job Description

Description

The Genomics Culture Laboratory is a preanalytical lab that does specimen receipt and processing for genetic tests including conventional chromosome FISH and microarray analysis. We are responsible for the manual processing of bloods bone marrows amniotic fluids and sold tissues for the preparation of slides and cultured cell pellets for direct analysis or DNA extraction.

As a Lab Assistant you will work collaboratively with team members and patients with direction from your supervisor. You will be responsible for performing a variety of clerical processing and other lab duties that include the following:

  • Building remote lab specimen kits
  • Shipping/receiving
  • Answering a high volume of calls from patients and Mayo Clinic staff
  • Identification verification
  • Maintaining supply inventory
  • Filing
  • Stocking
  • Working with various computer information systems on a daily basis
  • Partnering with team members by fostering an inclusive work environment and respecting others with different backgrounds experiences and perspectives

*Individuals hired to this position are required to complete 2 years in this position before becoming eligible to apply to other positions within Mayo Clinic.

**This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship; Also Mayo Clinic DOES NOT participate in the F1 STEM OPT extension program.



Qualifications

To be considered for the Lab Assistant position you must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • A background in science and 12 years medical experience is preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience or knowledge of computers and keyboarding telephone operations and other office equipment desired.
  • Knowledge of laboratory functions
  • Medical terminology
  • Ability to accurately read specimen labels and work with numbers to prevent mislabeling.
  • Must be organized with the ability to prioritize and work in a fastpaced environment.
  • Must possess good human relations skills and be able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Must be able to accommodate scheduling adjustments offshifts holiday and weekend work assignments.
  • Requires the ability to be attentive to details and to adhere to strict safety requirements for handling chemicals reagents and infectious agents.

***NonDLMP employees that have been in their current department/position for less than 1 year must attach early release approval from supervisor.

*International transcript:

  • MUST have a DETAILED equivalency evaluation.
  • MUST show US equivalent degree.
  • Evaluation MUST be completed from an organization listed as a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES)www.nacesOR the Association of International Credential Evaluators Inc. (AICE)www.aiceeval
