Position Title: 421A Technician Field Position
Reports To: Shop Manager
Location: Head Office Etobicoke

The 421A Technician will diagnose the causes of breakdown ordering required parts removal rework and installation of various engine and chassis components as well as implementing and /or modifying maintenance schedules. Work assignments will be received in the form of oral or written work orders but the Heavy Equipment Mechanic will be expected to determine the nature and extent of the necessary repairs.
Responsibilities
- Repair and adjust hydraulic pumps safety valves and any other necessary mechanical components
- Inspect repair and adjust gasoline and dieselpowered units
- Adhere to workplace safety policies regulations and compliances
- Communicate any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting
- Diagnose defects in heavy duty equipment
- Perform mechanical repairs on equipment in the shop and road calls when required
- Operate automotive servicing equipment
- Installation of new and addedon equipment
- Electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting and diagnostics
- Repair cooling and lubrication systems
- Install and align engines and machinery
- Repair mechanical transmissions drivetrains and final drives
- Test repaired equipment for proper performance
- Clean lubricate and perform other maintenance work
- Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology and repair techniques
- Other mechanical repair work as required
- Mentor apprentice mechanics
Educations and Experience
- 421A Licenseis preferred
- Union membership is preferred
- Completion of college/CEGEP/vocational or technical training
- Appropriate credentials and certifications
- 510 years experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic
- Possess a valid drivers license
- Mathematics oral and written communication skills at the trade journeyman level
- Ability to work independently in a busy environment
- Experience with routine maintenance operations
- Working knowledge of related maintenance and repair practices
- Working knowledge of diesel engines hydraulic pumps motors and air brake systems
- Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
- Able to work well under pressure
- Ability to deal with multiple tasks and prioritize work effectively
- Strong attention to detail
- Able to deal with people sensitively tactfully diplomatically and professionally at all time
Working Conditions
Travel Requirements
To offsite locations will be required
Physical Environment
20 shop. 80 construction site visits. Moderate exposure to disagreeable elements (such as inclement weather).
Physical Demands
High. Manual activities bending twisting lifting up to 50 lbs. occasionally. Physical hazards associated with the trade.
Mental Effort
Moderate intensity. Occasional challenges that demand higher level focus.
