The Boeing International Space Station (ISS) Space Environments team in Houston Texas is seeking a Space Environments Engineer to provide support to Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) serving Boeings Space Exploration programs primarily the ISS located in Houston Texas. We are looking for a broad range of experience including an Associate or Experienced Engineer to fill this position. The space environments engineer will provide multidisciplinary technical analysis support in the areas of radiation plasma and external contamination. This will include data analysis model development defining test objectives and supporting verification analyses. The position will require problem solving as space environments is a challenging field due to minimal data often times available to anchor analyses for the environment that hardware is exposed to in space.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Analyze/model radiation transport through spacecraft shielding

  • Support development of radiation requirements for component procurement specifications including radiation test requirements

  • Analyze/model plasma effects and spacecraft charging

  • Assess compatibility of spacecraft hardware with radiation/plasma environment

  • Develop and update semiempirical and theoretical models of natural and induced space environments

  • Compare modeling results with onorbit data

  • Implement the complete software development cycle (requirements development design coding testing) for the developed models (in Fortran C etc.

  • Conduct systems engineering trade studies to define operational and design changes to mitigate risks

  • Support external contamination plasma and radiation verification activities

  • Provide analysis support to Space Station onorbit operations payload science utilization and resolution of onorbit anomalies

  • Analyze molecular contamination and molecular transport of contaminants from materials outgassing vacuum venting and rocket engine thruster plumes onto the Space Station and its complement of science payloads

  • Analyze optical property impacts from molecular contamination with exposure to the orbital environment (ultraviolet radiation and atomic oxygen)

This position is expected to be 100 onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology) chemistry physics mathematics data science or computer science

  • 1 years of experience using strong analytical and problemsolving skills
  • 1 years of experience with coding and/or programming

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 5 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (level 3

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering from an accredited course of study in Aerospace Mechanical Chemical Nuclear) or in Physics or Chemistry.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate across multiple disciplines with internal and external customers

  • Computer proficiency and ability to use and navigate the internet and various computer software programs (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)

  • Knowledge and ability to understand and interpret technical data

  • Skill and ability to collect organize synthesize and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources

  • Exposure to ionizing radiation analysis is highly desirable.

  • Exposure to spacecraft contamination analysis molecular transport materials outgassing molecular gas dynamics thin film deposition photochemistry optical property degradation and scientific computing/computer graphics is highly desirable.

  • Electrical engineering fundamentals (i.e. knowledge and skills related to the analysis measurement and design of digital and analog circuits as well as the associated lab equipment) will be useful

Typical Education/Experience:

Associate (Level 2

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering computer science mathematics physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master). In the USA ABET accreditation is the preferred although not required accreditation standard.

Experienced (Level 3

Bachelors degree and typically 5 or more years experience in an engineering classification or a Masters degree with typically 3 or more years experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering computer science mathematics physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred although not required accreditation standard.
