Description

Lactation Consultant Family Birthing Services

  • PRN will need to work a min of 24 hours off shift per 6 weeks.
  • First 2 shifts need to be schedule on weekends or night shift.
  • Shift and weekend differential pay
  • 14bed LDRP unit. Required Neonatal Resuscitation Program will be provided AWHONN Fetal monitoring basic and intermediate provided ACLS
  • 14bed overflow/postpartum unit
  • OB/GYN and CNM providers
  • Provides familycentered maternity andnewborn care
  • Approximately 1800 births annually
  • Level II NICU
  • Staffed with Lactation Consultants
  • Clinical Ladder opportunities

The Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for implementing directing and coordinating the care of patients through the use of the nursing process: assessment planning implementation and evaluation. Included is recognition and treatment of the physical and psychosocial changes unique to the age/population group served on the specific unit.

1. Demonstrates safe medication practice.
2. Maintains a professional image that reflects the employees role in health care with confidence and a positive impression.
3. Completes chart check to ensure no missed orders.
4. Accurately transcribes physicians orders.
5. Demonstrates therapeutic communication skills.
6. Demonstrates ability to assess patient education needs and use of patient education resources.
7. Demonstrates involvement in unit by attending 50 of staff/committee meetings and inservices for area.
8. Demonstrates leadership through the nursing process and supervision while maintaining accountability for treatment and patient outcomes.
9. Acts as a resource person regarding patient care specialty area orientation and teaching of staff.
10. Responds to delays in a calm manner. Apologizes for inconveniences and gives alternatives.
11. Analyzes assessment data identifies priority problems and documents on Plan of Care in PCS for patients and families and significant others.
12. Uses effective problemsolving skills to plan patient care.
13. Identifies critical factors evidencing changes in patient condition and responds appropriately.
14. Completes and documents discharge assessment against plan of care goals.
15. Initiates and maintains Intravenous Therapy according to IV standards.
16. Responds appropriately to emergency situations.
17. Utilizes proper body mechanics to prevent injury to self and others. Safely positions transfers and transports patients
18. Provide Lactation support and services to breast feeding mothers/infants by provider or nurse referral
19. Makes appropriate decisions regarding breastfeeding devises as needed and initiates their use and instructs parents on how they are used.
20. Collaborates with pediatric neonatal OB and FBS to develop feeding plans for the breastfeeding dyad.
21. Uses evidence based practice and current lactation theories and research to develop feeding plans that address individual feeding issues such as nutritional requirements while respecting the patient and families breastfeeding goals.
22. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide continuity of care throughout hospitalization and upon discharge.
23. Notifies physicians and staff of problems identified
24. Teach coach support and mentor nursing staff and other healthcare learners to promote evidence based clinical practice in support of breastfeeding.
25. Participate in the development implementation and evaluation of standards of practice guidelines policies and protocols within the area of lactation.
26. The consultant will provide postnatal consultation and support. Follows up with all discharged breastfeeding mothers by phone and assesses for development of problems with lactation and documents and/or refers appropriately.
27. Provide workshops/inservices for the hospital staff/office and clinic staff to reinforce and update knowledge about the lactation process.
28. Expand and coordinate breastfeeding education/support through the development of classes for the breastfeeding patient during the pre/postnatal period.



Qualifications

Qualifications and Standards


Education: A. Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required. B. Evidence of participation in educational programs to update and maintain current knowledge and clinical skills.


Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required. Previous nursing experience in specialty area preferred.


Certifications/Licensure: Eligible for or currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in Pennsylvania. Certification in specialty preferred. CPR certification required. (ACLS required for Critical Care Emergency Care Pain Services SDS PACU Cardiac Rehab and Radiology. PALS required for Emergency Care PACU Pediatrics and Radiology. CNOR preferred for OR. CRRN preferred for Rehabilitation Medicine. Certified in Lactation through International Board Certified Lactation Association required.
