Job Description

Overview

The Certified Nursing Assistant assists the clinical staff in the care of and treatment for patients in an acute care setting under the supervisionof a licensed nurse. Responsibilitiesmay vary based on department assignment.

Responsibilities

Patient Care Activities

  1. Participates in nursing reports by receiving and contributing to status report of patients. Communicates abnormal findings or changes in patient status in a timely manner to supervising RN.
  2. Prepares patient and/or patient room for the admission transfer or dischargeprocess.
  3. Provides morning and evening care as well as general care routines such as bathing personal hygiene etc. in accordance with established nursingcare procedures to assure patients physical comfort.
  4. Takes and records vital signs pulse oximetery pain level height weight (and other measurements as applicable) in an accurate and precise manner.
  5. Prepares patients for meals assists in feeding patients and distributes water and other nourishment according to patients needs.
  6. Performs general care activities. Consistently follows hand hygiene and isolation practice guidelines established at WHMC.
  7. Makes rounds anticipates patients needs and responds to call lights promptly.
  8. Assumes responsibility for patients clothing and personal property (prosthetic devices hearing aides glasses etc. securing items in accordance with.
  9. Ambulates patients as per plan of care. Assists with or transports patients as necessary.
  10. Collects appropriate specimens and labels specimens at the bedside properly. Transports in a proper and timely manner.
  11. Reports and/or records any changes observed in condition or behavior of the patient.
  12. Utilizes restraints as per physician order and only as a last resort. Appropriately monitors and assures appropriatedevice is used. Frequently toilets patients.
  13. Ambulates patients. Utilizes lift equipment appropriately and safely for all lifts/transport. Applies and utilizedgait belt appropriately to assist patients.
  14. Ensures accurate and timely documentation using the electronic medical record and assuring use of own login at all times.

  1. Independently performs assigned duties assists staff in deliver of more complex treatments and procedures.
  2. Demonstrates initiative by recognizing and performing duties which need to be performed although not directly assigned.
  3. Seeks guidance and direction as necessary for performance of duties.
  4. Recognizes and responds to priorities in the patient care process.
  5. Maintains a clean and safe environment for patients.
  6. Maintains equipment assigned to patient care and reports malfunctioning of equipment to appropriate personnel.
  7. Has the willingness and ability to perform additional duties and responsibilities in different areas of the department of the department or different departments on an asneeded basis or as determined by management.
  8. Follows established hospital and department policies.
  9. Demonstrates the philosophy of team concept.
  10. Participates in group projects and staff meetings with suggestions that enhance the work environment and increase productivity.
  11. Maintains confidentiality as related to job responsibilities.
  12. Exhibits willingness to resolve problems as they arise.
  13. Consistently projects positive professional image through appearance and behavior.
  14. Completes assigned work within shift.
  15. Complies with time and attendance policy.
  16. Assists in the orientation of new personnel to the unit. Acts as a buddy for new and/or registry staff.

Unit Specific Job Activities & Competencies

  1. Positioning orthopaedic patients (i.e. total knee/hip)
  2. Application of splints.
  3. Use of bed enclosures specialty beds and restraints.
  4. Ensures that professional licensure/certification responsibilitiesare completed timely as appropriate.

Customer Service

  1. As observed all interactions are conducted in a professional manner; is supportive and consistently demonstrates customer service standards.
  2. Verbal and written feedback from patients family members/significant others medical staff visitors and coworkers indicates behavior conducive to positive guest relations.
  3. Consistently exhibits appropriate phone protocol (e.g. answers phone promptly by the 3rd ring is courteous and helpful).
  4. Consistently contributes to the team effort (e.g. assists coworkers when need is observed or when required; offers constructive suggestions and ideas rather than complaints).
  5. Consistently displays a cheerful and positive attitude. Smiles in all interactions.
  6. Is present to greet all new admissions. Welcomes and Orients patient to the room and surroundings. Provides essential supplies for each patient.
  7. Rounds hourly on patients & families focusing on pain positioning toiletering (potty) and patient safety. Responds promptly to patient calls.
  8. Utilizes AIDET (acknowledge introduction duration explanation thank you) in all communications with patients and staff.
  9. Utilizes Onstage/Backstage techniques for communication with patient family and hospital staff.
  10. Consistently strives to understand anticipate and meet the needs expectations and satisfaction levels of patients and other customers.

Quality (Performance Improvement Risk & Patient Safety)

  1. Is aware of and participates in the performance improvement activities of the department.
  2. Completes incident reports regarding complaints or other issues.
  3. Actively promotes a culture of safety by speaking up when safety concerns are.
  4. Participates in departments Survey Ready efforts.

Professional Conduct Growth and Development

  1. Completes Mandatory Requirements (Such as Annual Updates Employee Health Screenings license/certification updates and other requirements within.
  2. Follows the chain of command.
  3. Attends 80 of department meetings inserviceprograms and training. Implements practices.
  4. Ensures that professional license/certification responsibilitiesare completed timely as appropriate.

Qualifications

Education/Training/Experience

All Departments Require:

  • One year acute care experience preferred may consider experience in a subacute or skilled nursing environment.
  • Effective communication skills in English.
  • Blingual in English/Spanish and/or English/Mandarin preferred.

Licenses/Certifications

All Departments Require:

  • Current California CNA certificate
  • Current BLS certificate

Pediatric Subacute Requirements:

  • Prior experience working with the pediatric population
