Summary of Duties:
Maintain large number of honey bee colonies and manage all operations related to beekeeping and bee research based from the Pullman campus. The candidate will be directing controlling many of the apiaries daily operations including managing bee colonies assembling woodenware operating forklifts harvesting and extracting honey and other tasks as needed for program operations. Qualified candidates must be available to travel to various apiary sites across Washington and some extended stays in California. Hours and schedules can range based on seasonal requirements. Including hours into late night/early morning; some weekends might be required.
We are looking for an individual who is organized and communicates well. The successful candidate will balance the requirements of colony management needed to assist research goals and maintain a modest research apiary program of around 150200 honey bee colonies. The incumbent will supervise employees to assist in beekeeping duties; they will manage operations and services including financial planning budgets and allocation of resources. The successful candidate will also be working with employees in the field performing beekeeping duties. Good communication skills are key for interactions with stakeholders land owners students and principal investigators (PI).
Required Qualifications:
A Bachelors degree in a relevant field and four 4 years of progressively responsible experience in a field related to the functional managerial area which has included at least one 1 year of supervisory experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a yearforyear basis.
Experience managing a large number of bee hives (at least 50 hives)
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to effectively interact with people in a positive manner.
Ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Must have or be able to obtain by time of hire a valid drivers license and meet requirements in accordance withSPPM 7.10and departmental driving standards.
Basic computer skills required including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel) internet searching email communications and Zoom virtual meetings
Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs short distances without assistive tools. Fine motor manipulation for safe handling of honey bees including delicate pinching and using forceps.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience operating forklifts or other industrial equipment
Experience operating a larger vehicle with cargo and/or trailer
Ability to operate vehicles using automatic and manual transmission fourwheel drive.
Demonstrated experience in a team leadership position
Additional beekeeping speciality experience including but not limited to honey bee research queen rearing pollen trapping monitoring pest management
WA State pesticide applicators license or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
Additional Information:
This is a full time 100 FTE) temporary position. This position is overtime eligible.
This is a temporary position expected to end one year after date of hire . Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend.
Monthly Salary: $5072.29 $6199.47 Commensurate with experience and qualifications
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110 the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidates current experience education skills and abilities related to the position.
