Job Description

Position Description:

FullTime: The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Vanguard University of Southern California invites applications for a fulltime tenuretrack faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to begin the fall semester of 2025. The department is housed within the College of Arts and Sciences which champions a holistic Christian liberal arts education. Vanguard faculty are committed to excellence and to integrating faith in their respective disciplines. Founded in 1920 Vanguard is located in Costa Mesa not far from the Pacific Ocean. Today nearly half of our undergraduate students are Hispanic and Vanguard is a federallydesignated Hispanic Serving Institution.

Areas of specialization are open but candidates should be strong in sociological and criminological theory and methods. Candidates with topical interests that will enhance current course offerings in Sociology or Criminal Justice are preferred.

The mission of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice is to equip student scholars with theoretical methodological and substantive knowledge to become professionally competent practitioners who are devoted to a flourishing society.

Essential Functions:

Candidates should be comfortable teaching sociological and criminological theory and methods.

Candidates should engage students in the integration of faith and learning.

Candidates should teach four courses per semester (eight per year).

Candidates should be comfortable teaching across modalities.

After the first year of employment should have department and committee responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have completed (or be in the final stages of completing) a Ph.D. in Sociology or Criminology.

Evidence of a strong commitment to undergraduate education. This includes advising and engaging in research collaboration with undergraduates.

Commitment to pedagogical methods that enable students across racial ethnic and socioeconomic groups to reach their maximum potential.

Possess a vibrant Christian faith and be committed to an academically rigorous integration of faith and learning.

Salary:

Fulltime position. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Assistant Professor: $60595 to $81501

Associate Professor: $70676 to $95190

Professor: $82031 to $113974

Placement at appropriate rank (e.g. Assistant Associate or Full Professor) and initial salary is dependent upon education experience and based on Vanguards faculty compensation schedule. The upper range is reserved for candidates that demonstrate the highest level of proficiency within a particular rank. Vanguard University also offers a very competitive and generous benefits package.

Vanguard offers both tenure track and term faculty contracts; the type of contract offered will be determined based on the candidates qualifications at the time of hire.

2. Philosophy of Christian Education and Role of a Christian University. Explain what you believe to be the elements essential to the educational theory & practice of a Christian University.

3. Integration of Faith Teaching and Scholarship. Explain how you integrate your faith with your discipline & in your teaching and scholarship.

Any other qualifying experience paid/voluntary other.

Pastoral reference letter Pastor or church leader.
