The opportunity

Southern New Hampshire University is seeking a student employee to fill the role of Animal Care Specialist for the NH Audubon in Auburn NH. Under direct supervision of the Education Coordinator perform animal care duties for the animal ambassador collection at NH Audubons Massabesic Center. Support environmental education efforts to enhance visitor experiences while promoting our mission to protect New Hampshires environment for wildlife and for people.

Job Responsibilities:

Perform all aspects of animal husbandry including but not limited to:

  • Cleaning enclosures
  • Preparing diet and feeding animals
  • Providing behavioral and environmental enrichment devices
  • Handling animals
  • Observing behavior
  • Monitoring animal health and keeping records
  • Participating in animal training for husbandry purposes
  • Interact with and answer questions for visitors including school groups and the general public in a professional and friendly manner to generate excitement for the natural world via handson artifacts and materials in the Animal Room.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in classes as part of a SNHU degree program
  • Work study part of financial aid package
  • Students with work study may be prioritized
  • Reliable transportation
  • Some animal husbandry experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of caring for reptiles amphibians invertebrates and/or aquatic tanks preferred.
  • Knowledge of New Hampshire wildlife and environmental concepts preferred.
  • Comfort with talking to the general public and working with children required.
  • Must have the ability to bend stoop and lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Will provide training to the right candidate.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will gain experience with best practices in animal husbandry related to reptiles amphibians aquatic wildlife and invertebrates.
  • Students will learn environmental education concepts and teaching methods.
  • Students will improve customer service and communication skills and will glean insight into nonprofit organization operations.

Compensation

The hourly pay range for this position is $12.00 $15.00. Actual offer will be based on skills qualifications experience and internal equity in addition to relevant business considerations.
