Software Engineer

The Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) of the Technical Services Support Contract (TSSC) at the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science Center (EROS) a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) funded project located near Sioux Falls SD is recruiting a mid to senior Software Engineer to support the Earth Observing System (EOS) project.

The candidate must be a creative problemsolver who can respond to evolving development needs in an applied research setting. Applicants must be able to work within a multidisciplinary a team of highly skilled Systems Engineers Software Engineers and Science staff to collaborate with multiple data providers and consumer across the vast LP DAAC user community to advance the Land Change Science mission at EROS.

The candidate will work in a fastpaced Agile development environment performing operations design and development for the NASA Earthdata Cloud. Earthdata Cloud is a core capability in NASAs Earth Observing System Data Information System (EOSDIS) which provides endtoend capabilities for managing NASAs Earth science data from various sources satellites aircraft field measurements and other programs. The candidate will ensure adherence to operational agreements and polices (including response times) compliance to program and NASA standards and requirements (including Section 508 compliance) leveraging of industry best practices for automation and scalability of assets and implementation of issue detection and alerts.

Education: Bachelors degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science

Experience: 510 years of relevant experience

Required Skills:

  • Three years of continuous residency in the U.S.
  • Knowledge of agile development practices using associated project management tools
  • Knowledge and understanding of application hosting with an emphasis using Cloud Services in an Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS) or Platform as Service (PAAS) environment
  • Indepth knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS) including networking and serverless services such as Lambda and Step Functions
  • Experience in supporting infrastructures and operations using DevOps automation tools such as Terraform Puppet Chef or Ansible. Focus on high availability of hardware data replication and provide realtime recovery in failure situations
  • Familiar with core suite of AWS services related to DevOps with depth in those that are heavily used when providing DevOps automation solutions including the Management and Deployment services such as Terraform and IAM
  • A strong desire to automate processes build software tools and create infrastructureascode solutions in a DevOps environment
  • Experience in developing data management systems
  • Ability to analyze current cloud infrastructure and define plan communicate and implement improvement solutions
  • Well versed in software engineering methodology and processes
  • Experience with secure software development practices and concepts
  • Experience with Representational State Transfer (REST) services
  • Knowledge of cloud microservice architecture including but not limited to networking data storage security cloud specific patterns and AWS service selection.

Desired Experience Knowledge and/or Skills:

  • Experience with the UNIX OS.
  • Experience with full life cycle Software design and development experience on large/complex ntier client/server applications.
  • AWS Solutions Architect or AWS Developer certifications

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Three years of continuous residency in the U.S. for issuance of a Government Security credential
  • The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for government facility access and user accounts.
