DescriptionJOB SUMMARY: The Athletic Training Fellowship is designed to prepare post graduate athletic trainers advanced placement through rigorous leadership clinical outreach and research opportunities with a focus on patient centered care.All duties and responsibilities performed under the supervision of a directing physician.Fellows will work closely in a comprehensive multidisciplinary model with sports medicine physicians orthopedic surgeons and certified athletic trainers to further develop clinical skills and a knowledge base beyond that of current undergraduate and graduate level practices. The twelvemonth fellowship includes patient care in our orthopeadic and primary care clinics specializing in Sports Medicine observation and in the operating room sports concussion training and management semiprofessional sports coverage Division I athletics coverage and high school outreach opportunities covering a wide variety of sporting events and research opportunities.This position offers a highly competitive annual stipend and includes full benefits.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelors or Masters degree (preferred) in athletic training from a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) program. New graduates are welcome to apply.
LICENSURE CERTIFICATION and/or REGISTRATION: BOC certified and licensed as a Certified Athletic Trainer in the State of North Carolina. Completion of American Heart Association Healthcare Provider (BLS) certification which includes CPR and AED training.
Essential FunctionsCLINICAL
- Direct patient contact for the evaluation and treatment of medical and musculoskeletal pathology consistent within the scope and practice of athletic training clinical competencies as defined by the NATA BOC and State of North Carolina Athletic Training Licensure.
- Performs appropriate medical history on each patient seen including but not limited to; thorough history of injury or condition primary or chief complaint pain level assessment past medical history quality of life and how it is affected and appropriate medications being taken.
- Performs appropriate physical exam on each patient seen including but not limited to; range of motion testing strength and/or manual muscle testing sensation/dermatome testing palpation functional testing ligamentous testing diagnostic ultrasound and special tests as needed.
- Orders diagnostic studies or other referrals under the direction of the supervising physician including but not limited to; Radiographs MRIs EMG studies CT scans Ultrasounds rehabilitation referrals physician referrals and appropriate medication prescriptions .
- Provides and determines appropriate rehabilitation/therapy exercises based on patient injury including instruction demonstration and feedback on patient performance of exercises.
- Performs therapeutic procedures such as would care dressing changes suture removal and cast application and removal.
- Determines best use/application of Durable Medical Equipment (DME) including fitting patients with DME splints wraps and other various equipment educates patients on appropriate application use and care of equipment.
- Removal of sutures and providing dressing changes to postsurgical patients as directed by the attending physician when necessary.
- Aiding the physician in preparing and administering injections required for patient care. Preparations include cleaning and disinfecting the area to be injected and preparing materials to be utilized throughout the injection process and performing duties under the direction of the supervising physician.
- Aiding the physician and support staff in preparation of the patient and surgical suite for surgeries performed by the attending physician. Preparations include room sterilization patient positioning and sterilization surgical draping and other surgical needs required by the directing physician when necessary.
- Communicate and educate patients possible or current plan of care such as inquiries about treatments therapies pre and post op care and expected outcomes.
- Administer concussion testing and education to patients suffering from concussions or head injuries.
- Perform other related clinical duties and administrative duties required by physician.
Essential FunctionsOUTREACH
- Provide athletic training services to high school college and/or community sporting events as determined necessary in order to attain departmental goals of fellowship.
- Understands and uses preventative measures to ensure the highest quality of care for every patient.
- Provides onsite recognition evaluation and immediate care procedures of illness and injury including emergency situations independent of setting.
- Performs clinical injury evaluation and assessment of patients level of function and follows standardized clinical practice in the area of diagnostic reasoning and medical decision making.
- Determines appropriate therapeutic treatment and provides rehabilitation and/or reconditioning strategies and taping / wrapping and bracing for preventative and protective treatment.
- Implement treatment program objectives including long and short term goals and an appraisal of those which the patient can realistically be expected to achieve from the program. Assessment measures to determine the effectiveness of the program are incorporated into the program.
- Collaborate with their directing physician recommends discontinuation of the athletic training service when patient has received optimal benefit of the rehabilitation and treatment program and notes final assessment of patient status.
- Determines return to play standards of injuries for athletes and the active population.
- Perform baseline concussion testing and additional testing if a concussion is sustained or suspected. Confirm appropriate followup of return to play guidelines.
- Maintain daily records of treatment logs injury reports doctors referrals DCR and medical inventory management used for the care of athletes according to clinic standards.
- Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students parents coaches athletic trainers medical personnel and the public.
- Perform other related clinical duties as required incumbent to State Board of Medicine/ Board of Athletic Training Statue and Rules

- Ability to understand and communicate medical terminology with patients parents coaches physicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Works within the Sports Medicine Team concept and accepts assignments based on department need and organizational needs and provides medical coverage as needed.
- Initiate problem solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with peers.
- Participate in and maintain competencies required for the position and specific unit/area(s) of assignment.
- Ability to work well with all ages races class and gender of people.
- Excellent communication skills to include oral and written comprehension and expression. Relay information appropriately over telephone computers and other communication devices.
