Job Description

JOB GOAL:

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

This position plays a key role in ensuring equal access to the educational opportunities for a student with a disability by providing accommodation support and assistance within the classroom environment. This position will join a team of individuals focused on advocacy service and support of students with disabilities. The Reader/Scribe will work independently under the supervision of Accommodation Services to provide one on one support to a student in the classroom. The ideal individual has welldeveloped verbal skills and vocabulary is a strong oral reader with a good command of the English language.

The typical work schedule for this position will be Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 1 pm but hours may vary as determined by student need.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Read class content directly to student
  • Record answers that are verbally dictated by student
  • Provide 1 on 1 support to a student in the classroom

Reader Responsibilities

  • Read assignments or tasks accurately to the student
  • Only read the instructions of the tasks at hand and must not explain or clarify questions
  • Describe visual elements of class content
  • May repeat the instructions of an assignment but only if the student requests to do so
  • May be asked to reread

Scribe Responsibilities:

  • Write accurately and at a reasonable speed
  • Write a correction if requested to do so
  • Refer any problems in communication
  • Must not give the answer to the student or lead a student to an answer
  • At the students request repeat what has been recorded
  • May be asked to record notes either handwritten or typed.

  • You possess a working knowledge of personal computer and have the ability to learn database software related to working with student data institutional data and communication.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in a classroom and/or lab setting. Occasional 1033 standing pushing pulling and grasping. Frequent 3466 reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant 67100 sitting walking repetitive motion talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS LICENSES CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Welldeveloped verbal and writing skills
  • Strong oral reader with a good command of the English language
  • Experience with individuals with disabilities
