BRIEF AGENCY DESCRIPTION

The Department of Administrative and Financial Services (DAFS) Corrections Service Center is responsible for program accounting cash management resident accounts and revenue/expenditure control for the Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) that support six adult facilities and one youth facility. These facilities keep our communities safer by reducing harm through supportive intervention empowering change and restoring lives.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION

As an Accounting Technician at the DAFS Corrections Service Center (CSC) located in Augusta doing work for the Mountain View Correctional Facility (MVCF) in Charleston you will work closely with agency personnel and the CSC Accounting Analyst for MVCF.

This is paraprofessional support work involving the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines in independently maintaining noncomplex accounts within an established accounting system or assisting senior accounting personnel responsible for maintaining complex accounts. Noncomplex accounts are characterized by a relatively small number of fund types revenue sources cost centers and cost allocations. Employees in this classification examine account for reconcile analyze and interpret basic accounting data and records in accordance with GAAP/GASB standards state/agency accounting procedures and appropriate internal controls. Employees use and apply basic accounting theory to analyze and resolve standard accounting transaction problems. Employees interact with programmatic staff to exchange factual information explain accounting processes and resolve accounting discrepancies and disputes. This classification is distinguished from Account Clerks by the fact that Accounting Technician work requires knowledge of accounting principles and includes preparing financial and statistical reports and summaries. Work is performed under general supervision.

While the position work location is in Augusta four days per week there will be one day instate travel REQUIRED TO MOUNTAIN VIEW CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting theories principles methods practices and terminology.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting standards and systems.
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting systems and standardized desktop technology and products.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles practices and techniques.
  • Ability to serve as a lead worker on works assignment and other projects.
  • Ability to apply accounting principles in locating and correcting accounting errors.
  • Ability to apply accepted accounting principles to income statements and balance sheets.
  • Ability to verify fiscal source documents and application of fees refunds collections and discounts.
  • Ability to prepare narrative and statistical reports and financial statements projections and schedules and analyze and interpret information from reports.
  • Ability to review fiscal transactions for conformity with applicable laws rules policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to recommend improvements in accounting controls financial review trails and business practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Entrylevel to intermediate education training and/or experience in accounting or another closely related field demonstrating competency applying accounting principles reviewing and processing business transactions and preparing reports.
