Job Description

Special Information:

Identity of applicants who become finalists may be released to the public if the Department deems it necessary. Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks through its employees and citizen commission and board provides for the stewardship of the fish wildlife parks and recreational resources of Montana while contributing to the quality of life for present and future generations. In support of this mission the Parks and Outdoor Recreation Division is responsible for: visitor use recreation management and maintenance at state parks fishing access sites and wildlife management areas; river recreation management; access for hunting fishing and other types of recreation on public and private lands; shooting range development; and administration of trail and shooting range grant programs. In conjunction with the rest of the agency and its external partners the Division provides valued services to the public and manages human use to ensure the longterm sustainability of Montanas scenic historic cultural archaeological and fish and wildlife resources.

The Recreation Technician is a frontline position that provides general operational support of a variety of recreational offerings at state parks fishing access sites wildlife management areas and along river corridors. This can include day use areas campgrounds water access and amenities historic sites trail programs park offices visitor centers and entrance gates among others.

Job Duties:

Duties include assisting campers with questions monitoring recreation sites by foot or vehicle advise visitors of rules and regulations. Report violations observed to superiors. Monitor visitor use impacts on historical and recreational resources and advise visitors of best practices. Light duty maintenance responsibilities including groundskeeping janitorial services and minor repairs. Interaction with campers and the public is a regular occurrence and customer service skills are beneficial. Provide emergency assistance or medical aid as appropriate with training.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

Graduation from high school or equivalent education. One year of college or vocational training experience in park and recreation management interpretive visitor center or closely related setting is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required at time of application: General knowledge of basic customer service and safe work habits

Ability to: educate and inform visitors on compliance with rules and regulations and State laws; collect fees and make change; sell merchandise and account for monies collected; read maintain and prepare records and reports; and assist visitors in emergency situations. Daily interaction with site visitors requires effective communication and public relations skills.
