Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

The necessary knowledge skills and abilitiesare typically acquired through a combination of:

  • Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and;
  • Extensive experience working around and handling roping and clipping cattle and the ability to demonstrate safe work habits.

Previous Department of Livestock or Market experience is preferred.

Conditions of Employment:

Applicants must pass a background check have an acceptable driving record and possess a valid Montana drivers license.

Applicants must reside within the boundaries of either Custer Dawson or Richland county and be willing to travel and prepared to provide inspection services at each of the advertised Markets on a consistent and weekly basis. Travel may be between 50 to 75 based on location of a qualified applicant.

About this Opportunity

*This position is crucial for providing livestock inspection services to multiple designated Livestock Markets in Eastern Montana.

*This position is considered a Roving position that will have the exciting opportunity to provide consistent market inspection services at the Livestock Markets in Glendive and Sidney Montana and on occasion will assist in Miles City or other markets as needed. As a fulltime position the incumbent will be required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week and must have a desire to travel which could range from 50 to 75 of the time based on the location of a qualified applicant. Applicants will be provided a State Issued Vehicle in order to conduct needed travel. Overnight travel should be limited.

*Due to the demands of the position applicants must live within the boundaries of either Custer County Dawson County or Richland County MT. Applicants that live within 50 miles of Miles City Glendive or Sidney MT are preferred.

WHAT THIS POSITION DOES: Inspects livestock at livestock markets to document brands and other identifying characteristics. This may be required to be done with a handheld computer device. Collects and reviews paperwork from the livestock owner to ensure that ownership of livestock is clear and correct. Issues inspections and permits for animals moving or changing ownership near the livestock market. Provides clear instruction and clarification to producers when they have questions about Montana livestock regulations. This position will report to a Market Supervisor and does not supervise others.

Special Information: This position may have physical demands related to standing and walking for long periods of time (may work as much as 10 hours or more in a day). Livestock Inspectors must have the ability to handle livestock move quickly climb fences etc. in order to avoid serious injury. Working conditions sometimes involve continued exposure to extreme weather conditions dust and unpleasant conditions encountered in stockyards along with the inherent risk of injury associated with handling livestock in close proximity. The selected individual in this position will be provided a department vehicle and will require the ability to operate a motor vehicle legally and safely. Travel in this position is required between Miles City Glendive and Sidney on a regular weekly basis and will depend on location of a selected applicant however is expected to be 50 75 or of the time.

Applicants for the Market Inspector position must be: Experienced in quiet safe and efficient cattlehandling on foot and in close proximity to cattle. Able to spend most of the day standing and walking outside whatever the weather. Its not uncommon for an inspector to have 200000 steps in before noon on a busy sale day. Committed to maintaining a high standard of performance. The work that inspectors do protects the livestock industry from theft and disease. Patient clear and tactful when explaining regulations to the public. Livestock laws can be confusing and frustrating and helping our customers and the public understand them is a priority. To be a part of our team you must be willing versatile positive and kind. Able to operate a personal computer and other handheld electronic devices. Must possess a valid Drivers License. able to operate a motor vehicle and pass a background check..
