Job Description

We have a fantastic opportunity for someone to join our Pro Bono team as an Access to Justice Paralegal.

The successful candidate will be hired on a six month fixed term contract in the first instance however there is scope for this to be extended.

The Access to Justice team at Simmons and Simmons is dedicated to providing pro bono legal services to those who cannot afford representation. This team works closely with charities nonprofit organizations and individuals offering expert legal advice and representation in areas where access to justice might be limited. The teams work ranges from human rights and immigration issues to social enterprise and environmental law reflecting our firms commitment to social responsibility and community engagement.

Please note that the Access to Justice Paralegal will be expected to work from our London office a minimum of three days per week and the roles also requires regular attendance at offsite client meetings in addition.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Supporting the senior pro bono lawyer with all aspects of the A2J Programme.
  • Liaising with relevant stakeholders.
  • Assisting with onboarding new pro bono clients and case allocation.
  • Expanding thee.
  • Maintaining records of A2J matters and producing reports when required.
  • Matter creation and management of cases (training provided).
  • Broaden internal engagement.
  • Assisting with welfare appeals from filing through to representing at a tribunal.
  • Supporting vulnerable clients on a daily basis.


Person specification

  • Excellent academics.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a diverse and inclusive team.
  • Flexibility and a willingness to work additional hours on occasion as required.
  • Have a good understanding and awareness of social welfare issues preferably to include an understanding of social welfare law and the impact of poor administrative decision making.
  • Experience with working with a variety of stakeholders from diverse sections of society.
  • Extremely organised with an ability to prioritise.
  • An interest in wider systemic issues and administrative justice.
  • An ability to engage with vulnerable pro bono clients.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Nonjudgemental attitude.
