Job Description

The role of behavioral health coach (BHC) at CVCA is integral to maintaining the therapeutic milieu around the 24hour continuum of care. BHCs observe clients within the milieu serve as mentors and active listeners maintain safety for clients and staff throughout the campus and at large accurately record behavioral observations and report to mental health professionals about the demonstration of any atypical or escalating behavior.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited program and a Minimum of 1year direct care experience with children/ supervised practice in lieu of the experience requirement
  • or a High School Diploma (or equivalency) and twelve semester credit hours from an approved educational program and two years direct care experience.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have the temperament to work with and care for youth with special needs.
  • Demonstrates dignity and respect for the residents their family members and significant others.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of behavioral modification systems and child development
  • Able to perform physical activities with residents
  • Possesses good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exercises professionalism in dress manner attitude and judgment.
  • Exhibits a good working relationship with fellow staff.
  • Demonstrates basic computer literacy and writing skills.
  • Completes assigned tasks within time frames allotted.
  • Current certification in CPR First Aid Safe and Positive Physical Management and Medication Administration.
  • Valid drivers license from the state in which you reside and proof of current auto insurance.

Essential Job Functions:

Major highlights of the position requirements are noted below. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as required.

  1. Responsible for daily supervision of youth residents and being aware of their whereabouts at all times. Responsible for assisting in assuring that all client needs are directly met. Supervising and communicating with clients in a nonjudgmental (caring but firm) manner. Implement the daily program schedule in addition to organizing and carrying out activities with clients throughout scheduled shifts.
  2. Maintain strict confidentiality of all client identities records and information.
  3. All members of the Carson Valley Childrens Aide staff are considered Mandated Reporters of suspected child abuse or neglect as required by law. Must understand and adhere to CVCA policy and procedure for documenting and reporting any suspected child abuse or neglect.
  4. Maintain professional boundaries with clients and demonstrate/ensure that healthy staff to client working relationships are maintained. Maintaining courteous and professional relationships with supervisor coworkers clients client family members placing agency staff and referral agency staff.
  5. Responsible for managing crisis situations professionally and following agency policies and procedures related to emergencies.
  6. Function at all times within the ethical framework of CVCA and works to support the mission and goals of the organization.
  7. Serve as healthy adult mentors to youth by rolemodeling positive decision making the appropriate management of emotions such as anger and frustration and problem solving skills
  8. Provide client education formally in a group setting and informally in one on one conversations
  9. Responsible for Cottage wakeup and daytime procedures.
  10. Develop improve and employ group and individual counseling and management skills to meet the needs of the Residents.
  11. Provide transportation for medical school and cottage needs as assigned by supervisor
  12. Provide supervision for any resident not in an educational program.
  13. Transporting clients to appointments school activities etc.
  14. Assist in admittance and discharge procedures of clients.
  15. Daily maintaining complete and accurate records incident reports daily staff logs/vehicle logs and reading assigned logs daily. Answering and logging all telephone calls in a professional manner.
  16. Ensure that bedroom checks selfharm checks drug tests etc are completed per program procedures.
  17. Responsible for daily care of the facility and keeping it clean and in order with the help of the clients. Assist in meal preparation on weekends and when necessary.
  18. Being present and punctual for all scheduled shifts including weekends and holidays and remaining awake and alert at all times. Serve as resource person and take oncall duties when designated by supervisor.
  19. Attending all mandatory staff meetings. Responsible for attending all mandatory trainings as scheduled in order to ensure that the required minimum number of training hours and competency areas per year are met and achieved.
  20. Responsible for timely periodic submission of all required clearances and physicals.
  21. Willingly assist in all other duties as assigned.

Training Requirements:

  • All new hires are required to participate in onboarding orientation and site/program specific orientation.
  • Complete 40 hours of training a year including all mandated topics.
  • Maintain current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Safe Crisis Management every six months.

  • Primary location is Flourtown Neighborhood Center
  • Direct contact with Residents
  • Residential/Cottage setting
  • Exposure to outdoor environment

Physical Considerations:

  • Significant physical exertion required
  • Participation in sports and other activities with residents.
  • Maintenance of composure in crisis with youth
  • Ability to restrain youth physically and in accordance with accepted agency guidelines
  • Must be able to pass CPR and First Aid Training.
  • Must be able to pass Safe and Positive Training.
