OVERVIEW OF ROLE (Medians and Bikeways)
Under direct supervision performs a variety of entry level to semiskilled maintenance tasks in the areas of maintenance landscaping construction and equipment operation for City of Boulder transportation corridors multiuse paths and medians and performs related duties as required.

Job Description:

IRRIGATION

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs troubleshooting diagnosis installation and repairs to irrigation systems along transportation corridors multiuse paths and in median and pocket park areas.
  • Identifies deficiencies and additional maintenance needs to maintain the health of various types of turf shrubs and trees in assigned areas and clearly explain these needs to lead staff or supervisor.
  • Performs snow and ice control operations with various equipment.
  • Safely works in and around moving traffic and in congested work zones.
  • Uses tools and equipment in the performance of maintenance tasks and may perform minor and preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
  • Remains generally alert to conditions and events occurring on public right of ways indicating anticipated or needed repairs and report such conditions to supervisors.
  • Interacts with members of the public in the field to provide information and customer service. Provides input into responses to inquiries from the public and/or internal departments/requestors.
  • Promotes a safety culture by observing and following all city and department safety procedures regulations and policies and assists in ensuring others do so to promote a safe work environment and prevent injuries and illnesses.
  • Responds to 25 afterhours work during irregular hours weekends evenings holidays and emergencies.
  • Responds to 100 of snow shifts when called from October through April.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Transportation Maintenance Technician I II and II

  • Ability to learn and implement safety practices including situational awareness.
  • Ability to learn to operate a variety of landscaping equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe use of hand tools commercial and light duty vehicles outdoor power equipment and trailers.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
  • Valid Drivers License and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Have a maintain acceptable background information including criminal conviction history.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Transportation Maintenance Technician I

  • Ability to operate frontend loader skidsteer loader or other motorized equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand maps blueprints and other construction drawings.
  • Knowledge of basic asset management software.
  • Flagger Certification.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
  • OSHA 30hour training.
  • One 1 year experience with snow operations.
  • One 1 year landscaping installation and irrigation experience.
  • One 1 year of experience in outdoor physical maintenance or construction with preference given for experience in landscape irrigation including basic knowledge of plant tree and identification or equivalent combination of education training and experience.
  • One 1 year experience in heavy construction.

Transportation Maintenance Technician II

In addition to the Transportation Maintenance Technician I preferred qualifications:

  • Two 2 years experience with snow operations.
  • Two 2 years landscaping installation and irrigation experience.
  • Two 2 years experience in outdoor physical maintenance or construction with preference given for experience in landscape irrigation including basic knowledge of plant tree and identification or equivalent combination of education training and experience.

Transportation Maintenance Technician III

In addition to the Transportation Maintenance Technician II preferred qualifications:

  • Three 3 years experience with snow operations.
  • Three 3 years landscaping installation and irrigation experience.
  • Three 3 years experience in outdoor physical maintenance or construction with preference given for experience in landscape irrigation including basic knowledge of plant tree and identification or equivalent combination of education training and experience.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Transportation Maintenance Technician I

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain Flagger certificationATSSA (American Traffic Safety Services Association) or equivalent certification as a traffic flagger within nine 9 months of hire.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain class A or B CDL with tanker endorsement and without airbrake restriction six 6 months after passing probation.
  • OSHA 10hour within twelve 12 months of hire.

Transportation Maintenance Technician II

In addition to the Transportation Maintenance Technician I Required Education and Experience:

  • Two 2 years experience in heavy construction.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain class A or B CDL with tanker endorsement and without airbrake restriction six 6 months after passing probation.

Transportation Maintenance Technician III

In addition to the Transportation Maintenance Technician II Required Education and Experience:

  • Three 3 years experience in heavy construction.

SUPERVISION

Supervision Received: Transportation Maintenance Supervisor

Supervision Exercised: None

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical and Mental Effort: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to operate equipment and review evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate equipment. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes which permits the employee to work in an outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions and in confined spaces and to operate equipment while working in and around moving traffic. Upper body strength to lift and carry equipment and supplies as needed. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines public contact and changing priorities and conditions.
  • Work Environment: Works outdoors in a variety of weather conditions in and around moving traffic and in confined spaces. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.
  • Machines and Equipment Used: Hand and power tools longhandled tools jackhammer chainsaw tamper grinder compressor safety devices utility truck single and tandemaxle dump trucks backhoe loader twoway radio telephones calculators and copy/fax machines.
