Qualifications
Position Summary: The Mechanical Development Designer provides conceptual and detailed designs of New Technology systems & equipment used for the development of ironmaking and melting technologies and processes.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Mechanical Designer does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Utilize CAD software to create mechanical system and equipment drawings for the basic and detailed engineering for assigned New Technology (NTN) activities.
- Proficient in the use of Inventor AutoCAD software and related Autodesk products.
- Take conceptual designs sketches and ideas from engineers to develop the details necessary for a complete engineered drawing package capable of being used for purchasing fabrication erection in the field and design analysis.
- Layout of plant equipment piping and utility systems.
- Perform checking of mechanical and equipment drawings for consistency with conceptual ideas design sketches etc.
- Assist engineers by suggesting design changes that might improve the desired results of the design.
- Assist engineers with Requisitions Specifications Quality Documents and other technical documents as required to carry out RTD tasks and functions.
- Travel to plant sites to perform analyses of mechanical system ducting routes and equipment layouts for use in developing layouts for NTNs.
- Travel to fabrication facilities to perform mechanical equipment inspections testing and verify adherence to NTN designs.
- Work as a teammate with all company departments and employees in all assignments. Work toward building consensus on all assignments by finding solutions which meet the best interests of all parties involved.
Skills/Abilities:
Required:
- Advanced computer skills including use of Microsoft Office and Autodesk products.
- Proficient in use of AutoCAD and Inventor or equivalent software.
- Excellent technical writing and interpersonal skills.
- Multitask while meeting schedule and deliverable deadlines.
Preferred:
- Advanced 3D modeling skills and the use of Vault.
- Microsoft Excel skills including pivot tables and developing lists for engineering.
- Perform basic mechanical and system calculations.
- Coordinate design schedules with engineers.
- Understand P&IDs for use in equipment design and system checking.
- International travel experience.
- Industrial plant experience.
- Willingness to stay for extended periods at a plant site.
Education and Experience:
- Associate Degree in a mechanical discipline or a minimum of five 5 years of handson experience in a technical environment.
Travel Requirements:
- Up to 25 International and Domestic based upon project demands and periodically more during specific project stages.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to move around an industrial plant site including safely climbing inside and around equipment.
