JOB SUMMARY


The Surveys and Mapping Unit provides corporate Legal Surveys and mapping services in support of the Citys planning development and infrastructure operations and to enable all Cityled construction projects.

You are responsible for analyzing compiling interpreting and creating Legal Survey Plans and products. You must consider a variety of complex matters such as property ownership; including dominant and servient interests geodetic control digital mapping data and Legal Survey retracement principles to enable you to prepare legal survey plans geographically related base maps sketches and drawings ensuring their conformance to relevant Provincial Statutes and Regulations. You must operate complex interactive computer programs to enable the creation of these products.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


Completion of 3 year community college diploma in Geomatics or a related discipline with a concentration in Legal Surveys

Minimum of 4 years of experience in survey and mapping data compilation

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Certification as Survey Technologist by Association of Ontario Land Surveyors is an asset

KNOWLEDGE

  • Ontario statutes and regulations relating to surveys and plans
  • The Ontario Land Registration System
  • Ontario Cadastral Survey fabric
  • Interactive graphics hardware/software
  • Coordinate geometry software
  • Computer Aided Drafting Software
  • Microsoft Office
  • Current GIS computer technology aids
  • Digital mapping methods and procedures
  • Survey computations
  • Coordinate systems and datums
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation including the rights and duties of workers

COMPETENCIES SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Compile and produce digital maps plans and sketches using Computer Aided Drafting software
  • Able to operate an interactive graphics workstation
  • Operate automated plotters and computer peripherals
  • Able to compile and evaluate survey evidence
  • Competent in the use of complex mathematical equations
  • Ability to analyze and enter deeds easements right of ways and ownership information into plans
  • Understand computer software packages and manuals
  • Best practices for data management to ensure properly inventoried and archived final products
  • Must be thorough and meticulous
  • Must have initiative reliability and tact
  • Ability to think analytically and be attentive to accuracy and detail
  • Possess effective interpersonal and oral/written communication skills
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively with all staff as part of a team
  • Participate in team meetings to leverage best practices and ensure consistency in project deliverables
  • Mentor and provide hands on training for junior team members
  • Able to communicate effectively with supervisor to ensure that legal survey issues are resolved in an effective manner
