2025 SUMMER INTERNAL INTENT FOR RURAL PROGRAM


ONLY CURRENT CAMP FIRE ALASKA EMPLOYEES MAY SUBMIT AN APPLICATION FOR INTERNAL INTENT.


PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

  • Program: The Rural Alaska Program travels to Alaska Native communities throughout the state to deliver summer day camp programs to youth teens families and elders. Camp Fire sends staff supplies food and fun to different communities creating a fun summer camp experience while teaching about healthy life choices reducing high risk behaviors encourage youth and community engagement.
  • Location: Various Rural communities within Alaska. Teams of staff travel to 3 communities providing a program that lasts 3 weeks in each community.
  • Pay: Travel Staff $15.88/hr Lifeguard certified $500 bonus.
    • 40 hours per week minimum Overtime on travel weekends 4 weekends a summer).
  • Work Dates: MidMay through early August.
    • 2weeks of training in Cooper Landing Alaska occurring in midMay prior to travelling out to assigned communities.
    • 3 three week programming sessions in Rural communities through all of June and July
    • Closeout occurs in earlyAugust in Anchorage.
  • Program Shifts: Rural Travel Camp staff reside in assigned rural communities. Work days typically run from 12pm9pm with programming from 12:00pm5:00pm and 7:00pm9:00pm. Staff generally have two days off each week to explore the local community.
  • Activities: Travel Camp Lead Staff develop and run summer day camp programs such as team building sports and games Native Youth Olympics. cold water safety and swimming outdoor recreation shelter building and community events. Some evenings are reserved for teenbased programs. We facilitate a community event once per week.


POSITIONS AVAILABLE:

Travel Camp Staff

  • Responsible for guiding campers (youth teens) and families in daily activities within the rural program schedule with a focus on implementing youth and communitybased programs maintaining strong community relations and cultural relevancy. Actively participate in lead teach and/or assist in all program areas assigned (i.e. cold water safety cooking health and nutrition creative arts hiking nature sports and games and facilitating large group activities as needed). Engage in work that supports Camp Fires Promise to provide youth with the opportunity to find their spark lift their voice and discover who they are.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Current Adult & Pediatric CPR/AED and First Aid from a nationally recognized provider required.
  • Minimum of 18 years of age required 21 preferred.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience working with diverse populations of youth (multicultural age gender etc) in an overnight camp or cultural exchange setting is strongly preferred.
  • Professional Rescuer or Wilderness First Aid Certification Preferred
  • Bachelors Degree in early childhood education education outdoor recreation sociology social work nursing or another related field is preferred.
  • Valid Drivers License and eligibility to drive agency vehicles preferred.
  • Current Lifeguard Certification from a nationally recognized provider (by start of position) required for bonus.
