Job Description
Position Summary
The UNC Biocuration and Coordination Core BCC is seeking a Research Associate / Software Developer to implement and maintain software supporting the Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen; https://clinicalgenome). Working under the direction of Dr. Bradford Powell this position includes hybrid roles as project owner and fullstack developer of Laravelbased applications that monitor and report on activities of biocurators and genetics experts. The research associate in this position will work with the BCC director Dr. Courtney Thaxton and others in the ClinGen resource to identify and implement improvements to optimize transparency and accuracy of system processes. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
Required Qualifications Competencies And Experience
Strong software development skills with relevant software tools (Laravel PHP javascript) and in techniques for modern software engineering are required. Qualified candidates must also demonstrate effective verbal and written communication excellent analytical and problemsolving skills attention to detail and hold high professional standards for their own work and that of others. Candidates must have ability to work in a team environment and have experience in working with domain experts to gather specifications for software development and then to implement those specifications.
Preferred Qualifications Competencies And Experience
The ideal candidate would have specific expertise in the software stack being currently used in our existing systems: Laravel to interact with MySQL backend database and Vue/javascript for frontend display. Prior develops experience with Kubernetes and/or Openshift is helpful. Candidates with prior experience in management of small development groups or who possess the interpersonal skills to supervise junior members of the team would be ideal. Although immediate planned activities deal with internal business processes or aggregate/deidentified data experience with data security standards for protected health information and other private data (e.g. HIPAA FISMA will also be taken into consideration. Qualified candidates will demonstrate effective verbal and written communication excellent analytical and problemsolving skills attention to detail and hold high professional standards for their own work and that of others. The ideal candidate will also be wellversed in genetics and genomic medicine. Candidates must have previous experience in management of small development groups or possess the interpersonal skills to supervise other junior members of the team.
