Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Performs blooddrawing procedures to obtain specimens from young adults 18 years) to geriatric (greater than 65 years) for laboratory testing. In addition must be able to perform blooddrawing procedures from babies (birth to early childhood up to one year) for laboratory testing. Patient population for the blood drawing will include immunosuppressed late stage cancer and the morbidly obese patient.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Demonstrates the skills and competence to process/prepare patients for venipuncture/stick.

a.Positively identifies patient according to department policy.

b.Confirms accuracy of all labels and requisitions according to dept policy.

c.Develops a relationship with the patient that is comforting and demonstrates confidence for the venipuncture/stick.

d.Properly instruct patients to obtain urine samples and/or 24hour collections of urine samples and all other samples as needed.

2.Demonstrates the skills and competence to accurately interpret and complete laboratory requisitions and/or place electronic orders.

a.Completes the laboratory requisition to include all necessary information; the legible documentation of assigned phlebotomy code collection date and other required information.

b.Properly completes electronic order in TOS and/or Lattice as necessary.

c.Follows procedures for obtaining standing order information according to dept policy.

d.Follows all requirements for the Blood Bank (initials date patient name and medical record number on all tubes and requisitions..

e.Follows department policies related to the collection of discharge/transfer and stat and timed collections.

3.Demonstrates the skill and competence necessary to perform the venipuncture/stick.

a.Selects the best area available for blood drawing.

b.Demonstrates skill with various types of needles and other collection equipment.

c.Follows order of draw standards at all times.

d.Follows procedures for the appropriate collection of blood cultures to avoid contamination of specimen.

e.Removes the tourniquet according to dept policy

f.Labels all samples in accordance with dept policy

g.Checks the wound site before leaving the patient.

4.Follows all Infection Control Guidelines throughout the venipuncture/stick procedure.

a.At all times wears appropriate personal protective equipment.

b.Follows all patient precautions and procedures for isolation.

c.Discards all equipment (sharps glove etc. as required.

d.Follow Hospital Hand Hygiene policy between all procedures and patients.

5.Demonstrates knowledge of collection criteria: correct tube(s) correct volume stability requirements and/or special handling.

6.Follows all directions as they are applicable to study protocols.

a.Cooperates with principle investigator and/or supervisor to draw appropriate tubes for tests requested and meet requirements for timed collections.

7.Completes phlebotomy check sheets logbooks and other documentation as required.

8.Demonstrates professional behavior and customer service skills at all times.

a.Answers all calls and returns all pages with name department and greeting.

b.Effectively interacts with Supervisor coworkers and clinical staff to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts.

c.Effectively interacts with patients and patients families to avoid stress and anxiety.

d.Demonstrates a caring and sensitive attitude to all hospital staff patients and families.

9.Works collaboratively as a member of the laboratory team at all times

a.Follows all policies and procedures related to attendance absenteeism tardiness and breaks.

b.Communicates in a professional and effective manner at all times.

10.Maintains and stocks Inventory:

a.Ensures adequate supplies on hand for rounds. Alerts Team Leaders or Supervisor when supply levels are low.

b.Routinely inspects tubes and other supplies for expiration dates and discards as appropriate.

12.Responsible for pagers and other hospital hardware.

a.Adheres to the pager protocol and is responsible for care of the paging device.

b.Adheres to the lattice protocol and is responsible for care of the scanners and printers.

13.Responsible for weekend/holiday hours according to the needs of the department.

14.Is responsible to be aware of Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals and to compile with BWH Hospital and Laboratory polices and procedures

15.Performs all other duties as asked and/or directed as applicable i.e.

a.Performs heel sticks according to policy and procedures.

b.Demonstrates knowledge for the administration of glucose solutions for glucose tolerance testing.

c.Performs EKGs according to department policy and procedure.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.High School diploma or equivalent.

2.Phlebotomy certification desired but not required.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

1.Knowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients.

2.Basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of veins.

3.Knowledge to select appropriate tubes and volumes for test(s) requested.

4.Ability to communicate with patients and families to alleviate fears and anxieties and make them feel comfortable and cared for.

5.Physically be able to stand and walk for long periods of time 90 of the day) and transport supplies and specimens as required.

6.Ability to communicate effectively with all clinicians and other hospital staff

7.Some computer skills necessary for training on the use of Email and hospital applications as required.

8.Demonstrate competencies in areas of:

a.Venipuncture technique and all blood drawing procedures.

b.Appropriate choice of test tube and required blood volumes.

c.Specimen labeling and patient identification.

d.Customer service skills to include ability to communicate with patients and staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1.Extremely busy work environment.

2.Exposure to needle sticks and punctures from other sharps.

3.Exposure to patients with infectious diseases. Must take appropriate precautions according to Infection Control and laboratory guidelines.

4.Required weekend/holiday rotation according to the needs of the department.

5. Very busy and fast pace work environment. Constantly changing work environment.
